If you’ve ever set foot in Hoi An Ancient Town, you may be surprised by the statue of a Western man. That is Kazimierz Kwiatkowski – affectionately known as “Mr. Kazik” – a Polish architect who played a major role in preserving Hoi An and helping it become a World Cultural Heritage site.
From the 16th to the 19th century, Hoi An was one of the busiest international trading ports in Southeast Asia. Merchant ships from Japan, China, the Netherlands, Portugal, and France flocked here, creating a space rich in commerce and cultural exchange. Traces of this fusion remain clearly visible on every tiled roof, wooden frame, and architectural detail of the old town – where Eastern-style houses feature balconies, arched doorways, and railings reminiscent of the West.
However, by the 1980s, Hoi An had become a quiet town after the war. The economy was stagnant, and people mainly relied on agriculture and handicrafts. Many ancient houses had deteriorated, covered in soot from traditional fabric-dyeing kilns. The old town seemed to sink into the dust of time, fading from Vietnam’s tourism map.
In July 1982, architect Kazik first arrived in Hoi An while working at the My Son Sanctuary. Struck by the solemn beauty and unique architectural value of the town, he exclaimed that it was an “unmined gold mine.” He immediately urged the local authorities not to demolish or rebuild anything, but to preserve every house and every historic detail as they were.
From then on, Kazik and his Polish colleagues worked with Vietnam to conduct numerous surveys, restorations, and prepare nomination dossiers to propose Hoi An to UNESCO. Although he passed away on March 19, 1997 in Hue – two years before Hoi An was officially recognized as a World Cultural Heritage site (on December 4, 1999) – his legacy lives on.
To honor Kazik’s contributions, the people of Hoi An erected his statue on Tran Phu Street – the heart of the old town. The statue was inaugurated on December 31, 2007, marking the 10th anniversary of his passing, as a heartfelt tribute to the foreign architect who helped preserve the soul of Hoi An for future generations.
Today, Hoi An is not only a popular tourist destination but also a symbol of heritage preservation and centuries-long cultural fusion. Each day, the city welcomes between 2,000 and 5,000 visitors, and nearly 10,000 on weekends.
