25 years ago, Hoa Binh hydropower plant was inaugurated as one of the biggest hydroelectric plants in Southeast Asia. Now it’s a major power producer in the country and a popular tourism destination.
The Hoa Binh hydropower plant was named “Vietnam’s construction of the 20th century”.
Its construction began in 1979, four years after the Vietnam war ended, and finished 15 years later.
The Hoa Binh hydropower dam is 128m high and 734m long with a total of 18 floodgates.
The plant has eight units that generate 1,920 MW of power, or 40 percent of the country’s total capacity at the time of construction.
Its construction involved 40,000 Vietnamese managers and workers and 750 Soviet experts.
The construction claimed 168 lives, including those of 11 Soviets. Their names are inscribed on a monument built on the bank of the dam.
The Hoa Binh hydropower plant, now a popular sightseeing spot, celebrates its 25 anniversary this year.
After visiting the plant, you can take a boat trip along the Da river, and visit the Bo Waterfall, Long Vuong temple and the nearby ethnic minority villages.
