Coober Pedy, a small town in the heart of southern Australia, is unlike anywhere else on earth. Known as the opal (*) capital of the world, it attracts people from nearly fifty nationalities who have come in search of fortune. What makes it even more remarkable is that most of its residents live not above ground but beneath it. In this barren desert, where the sun scorches relentlessly, the winds whip up dust storms, and rain is scarce, people have carved homes, shops, and even churches directly into the sandstone hillsides.
The story of Coober Pedy begins with its ancient origins. Around 150 million years ago, the area lay at the bottom of an inland sea. As the waters receded, silica seeped into cracks in the sandstone and hardened into the dazzling opals that would later draw miners from across the globe. In 1915, a young boy named Willie Hutchinson stumbled across a collection of opals while searching for water. His discovery sparked a rush, and soon a community was established in this unforgiving landscape. The name “Coober Pedy” itself comes from an Aboriginal phrase meaning “white man’s hole,” a fitting description for a town defined by its underground life.
Living beneath the surface was not just a novelty but a necessity. Underground “dugouts” maintain a stable, cool temperature year-round, offering residents relief from the desert’s extremes. Over time, these shelters evolved into fully functioning homes with bedrooms, kitchens, and even luxuries like swimming pools. The town continued to grow underground, adding hotels, bookstores, and places of worship, all hidden beneath the earth yet filled with vibrant life.
For visitors, Coober Pedy offers an experience that feels almost otherworldly. Travelers can explore opal mines, sleep in underground hotels, or even play a round of golf on a course with no grass, using glow-in-the-dark balls under the night sky. The surreal, lunar-like landscape has also inspired filmmakers, serving as a backdrop for movies such as Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Today, Coober Pedy stands as both a mining town and a lively testament to human adaptability. In one of the harshest environments on earth, people have created not just a place to survive, but a unique community that thrives beneath the desert floor.
