Laughing gas (N₂O): From a valuable medical tool to a public health concern

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

When people hear the term “laughing gas,” they often think of balloons filled with nitrous oxide (N₂O) at bars and clubs. However, few people realize that nitrous oxide (N₂O) is actually a gas with significant value in medicine, the food industry, and scientific research. The problem does not lie with the gas itself, but with the fact that it is increasingly being abused as a recreational substance, leading to many serious consequences for both health and society. For this reason, many countries have strengthened regulations or banned the sale of N₂O for recreational use while continuing to permit its use for legitimate purposes.

A gas with many important applications

Discovered in the 18th century, N₂O is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet smell that has pain-relieving and mild sedative properties. In medicine, it is one of the oldest inhaled anesthetic agents and is commonly used in dentistry, obstetrics, and certain surgical procedures to reduce pain and help patients feel less anxious. When administered under the supervision of healthcare professionals with an appropriate concentration of oxygen, N₂O is generally considered safe.

Beyond the medical field, N₂O also has numerous industrial applications. In the food industry, it is used as a pressurizing gas and propellant in whipped cream dispensers and is approved as a food additive in many countries.

In the electronics industry, N₂O is used to produce high-quality oxide layers during semiconductor manufacturing. Chemistry and materials science laboratories also use N₂O as an oxidizing agent or reaction gas in various research projects. In addition, the high-performance automotive industry uses N₂O as a power booster for engines in professional racing.

Why is N₂O abused for recreational purposes?

When inhaled, N₂O can produce temporary feelings of euphoria, relaxation, laughter, or a sense of detachment from reality that typically lasts from several seconds to a few minutes. It is precisely this short-lived but intense effect that has made laughing gas a popular recreational substance among some teenagers and young adults.

What is particularly concerning is that many people believe N₂O is “safe” simply because it is not classified as an illegal drug and is also used in hospitals. In reality, its safety exists only when it is used for the correct purpose, at the appropriate dosage, and under professional supervision. Frequent or excessive inhalation can result in a wide range of dangerous complications.

Serious effects on human health

N₂O can inactivate vitamin B₁₂ in the body. When this condition persists, the nervous system begins to suffer damage. Users may experience numbness in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, difficulty maintaining balance while walking, sensory disturbances, and even spinal cord injury. Many patients require prolonged treatment, and not all of them make a full recovery.

In addition to neurological damage, inhaling large amounts of N₂O can also cause oxygen deprivation, dizziness, fainting, accidents resulting from loss of consciousness, mental health disorders, irregular heart rhythms, blood clots, and, in severe cases, death.

The bottom line

N₂O is a gas with considerable value in medicine, industry, and scientific research. However, when abused to create temporary feelings of euphoria, it can cause serious damage to the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and mental health. Therefore, strictly regulating and prohibiting the commercial sale of N₂O for recreational purposes, while continuing to allow its use in legitimate sectors, is a reasonable measure to protect public health without hindering industrial production, scientific research, or medical treatment.
