Manchester United shirt sponsor, Chevrolet, is not planning to renew their partnership with the club.

 

Manchester United white-collars have been forced to find a new shirt sponsor for the 2021/22 season as Chevrolet look certain to snub a renewal.

 

United teamed up with the car manufacturer in 2012 when Sir Alex Ferguson was, unbeknownst to everyone else, nearing the end of his legendary reign.

 

Chevrolet penned a seven-year £410 million deal with the Red Devils to have their logo emblazoned on the United kit from 2014.

 

According to the Daily Mail, owners of Chevrolet, General Motors, are thoroughly unimpressed with the team’s performances since being tied to the club.

 

United have won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup since the partnership was struck up but have otherwise encountered a worrying on-pitch decline.

 

The club currently sit 12th in the Premier League table with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already under pressure just seven months into his stay.

 

Although United’s results have left GM wanting, it is touted that they did not plan on extending the contract anyway.

 

According to the report, one insider said: “It was doomed from the start. The feeling within was that Chevrolet had massively overpaid and it was never going to get done again.”

 

The man who agreed the deal, global marketing chief Joel Ewanick, was reportedly sacked less than 48 hours after it was announced.

 

Chevrolet are paying through the nose to benefit from United’s worldwide exposure, with the deal costing around £58.6m a season.

 

That figure dwarfs previous deals of the same ilk with Aon (2010-14), who paid £19.6m a season, AIG (2006-10), who forked out £14.1m and Vodafone (2000-2006), who stumped up £8m.

 

A host of famous brands are reportedly interested in making it onto the front of United’s jerseys as the club search for a new business partner.

 

Sponsorship revenue is the main pool of money from which transfers are funded and executive vice-chairman will not want to sign a less lucrative deal with another company.

 

For all of United’s on-field problems, the club posted record revenues last season of £627.1m.
