In recent days, the story of Mr. Nguyen Van Dung (born 1985, living in M’Đrak commune, Dak Lak province), who planted a flower road to remember his late wife who died in a traffic accident, has attracted much attention from the online community.
Planting a flower road to remember his wife
Sharing with reporters, Dung said that he and Ms. Bui Thi L. (born 1986) had known each other since their 12th grade. In 2010, they held their wedding. Afterwards, a son and then a daughter were born, making their home more complete.
Day by day, besides taking care of the family, Ms. L. also managed a fleet of excavators and took weekend university classes in accounting and auditing to gain more knowledge for the family’s business.
It seemed their life would forever be peaceful, until noon on December 30, 2024. After bringing lunch to a driver, on Truong Son Dong road (M’Drak commune), Ms. L. met a friend and stayed a while by the roadside to chat. Suddenly, a cement mixer truck rushed in and hit her, killing her instantly, while her friend was seriously injured.
Hearing the tragic news, Dung collapsed. Thinking of his two children, he tried to overcome the irreparable loss.
To remember his hardworking and faithful wife, D. decided to plant a rose garden with 1,000 bushes right on the stretch of road where the accident happened.
On that same stretch of road, for nearly a year now, Dung has planted rows of old flamboyant trees stretching nearly 1 km, along with many other kinds of flowers. Each tree is carefully tended by him, blooming brightly as if to send love and longing to his late wife.
The road, once tied to painful memories, is now gradually cloaked in the brilliant red of flamboyant and roses.
Writing an open letter on social media because roses were stolen
According to reporters, recently the roses that Dung planted along the roadside have repeatedly been stolen by passersby. Heartbroken at this, he had to write an open letter and post it on social media.
“These rose bushes I planted to remember my wife, who has forever gone in an accident on this very road. I hope everyone passing by will keep a little of these flowers, these memories, so that this place will always be as bright and warm as the love I have for her. Please don’t uproot and take them away; let the flowers bloom here, because these flowers are not just flowers… they are love and longing,” D. wrote.
Dung’s letter was immediately shared widely on social media. Many touching comments about his love for his wife were posted.
“Though his wife has forever gone after a tragic accident, in his heart that love still remains intact. He chose to go through the pain and remember her with an act that makes anyone who hears about it choke with emotion,” a Facebook user commented.
Facebook user Lam Nhi Cat T. expressed: “What an immeasurable affection! I deeply admire the love you have for her. Wishing you much health to care for your children. May her soul rest in peace.”
“Amidst the busyness of everyday life, that story is like a flame warming people’s hearts. A love that needs no vows, no limits of life or death, quietly enduring on this very land full of sorrow,” another social media account shared.
Mr. Pham Ngoc Quang, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of M’Drak Commune, said that the local authorities support Mr. Dung’s action.
“Mr. Dung has planted flowers and trees as a way of preserving love and the bond between husband and wife. The trees he planted along the roadside beautify the landscape and do not obstruct traffic visibility, so the local government is very supportive. We also hope that everyone will be mindful and not destroy the trees that he has worked so hard to plant and care for,” Mr. Quang shared.
