If you look at the US dollar bills issued in 2020, or South African banknotes, you may see they share similarities. And they are there for good reasons. Among these shared elements are seemingly innocuous circular patterns scattered across the surface, known as the Omron rings or the EURion constellation. Despite their unassuming appearance, these tiny circles play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of these currencies and thwarting attempts at counterfeiting.
The Omron rings, as they’re colloquially known, are not mere decorative features but strategic tools embedded within the design of secure documents worldwide since around 1996. Their primary purpose is to assist imaging software in detecting the presence of banknotes, checks, and ownership title certificates in digital images. This detection triggers a response in the software, often resulting in the prevention of unauthorized reproduction, particularly through color photocopiers, thus combating counterfeiting efforts.
The term “EURion constellation” was coined by security researcher Markus Kuhn, who stumbled upon the pattern while experimenting with a Xerox color photocopier in the early 2000s. He likened the arrangement of circles to the astronomical Orion constellation, with “EUR” referencing the ISO 4217 designation of the euro currency. Consisting of five small circles in yellow, green, or orange, repeated across banknotes at various orientations, the presence of these circles alone can prompt some color photocopiers to refuse processing.
The integration of the Omron rings varies across different currencies and denominations, demonstrating both creativity and functionality. For instance, on certain US bills, they cunningly masquerade as the digit zero within small, yellow numbers corresponding to the note’s value. Conversely, on Japanese yen, these circles may take on the delicate form of flowers, adding an aesthetic touch to their security function.

Despite their widespread use, the technical details surrounding the Omron rings remain closely guarded secrets. While a 1995 patent application suggests their origin at Omron Corporation, a Japanese electronics company, the specifics of the pattern and detection algorithm are kept confidential by its inventors and users. This secrecy underscores the critical role these features play in combating counterfeiting, as unauthorized disclosure could compromise their effectiveness.
In various instances, terms like “Omron anti-photocopying feature” and “Omron rings” have been used to reference these security measures, yet their official designation remains unclear. Their importance, however, is indisputable, as evidenced by their incorporation into the designs of banknotes worldwide and their ongoing role in preserving the integrity of currencies against fraudulent replication.
