This 13-year-old scientist invented a safer way to treat pancreatic cancer, and he hasn’t even started high school yet

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

An Oregon teenager’s innovation could change the way doctors treat pancreatic cancer. Rishab Jain of Portland, Oregon, who won the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, has come up with an algorithm that uses machine learning to help doctors zero in on the pancreas during cancer treatment.

The invention by Jain, 13, a student at Stoller Middle School, gives new hope in the treatment of a disease that has just a 7 percent survival rate, Time magazine says. According to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Jain’s algorithm uses artificial intelligence to find and track the healthy cells of the pancreas in real time. This is said to only improve the accuracy of the treatment but also increase the impact of the radiation treatment.

Jain began working on this project last year after learning of the lethal nature of pancreatic cancer. As luck would have it, at the same time, he was also working on artificial intelligence programming and wondered if he could combine his knowledge of both fields to develop a solution.

Jain’s software works with hospitals’ existing radiotherapy equipment or may be incorporated directly into new machines. He is currently in communication with doctors at local Oregon as well as big-name national hospitals, including Johns Hopkins Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Jain will use some his winnings to advance his machine learning project and fund the nonprofit he created, Samyak Science Society, which will promote STEM learning for children with limited opportunities.

The balance will go toward Jain’s college fund, so he can study to become either a biomedical engineer or a doctor. Jain is a shining example of the brilliance of our young people which can help solve society’s biggest challenges.
