Why do dogs (and cats) shed so much?

If you share your home with a dog or a cat, you’ve probably accepted that pet hair gets everywhere. While shedding can be frustrating, it’s actually a completely natural process that helps keep your pet healthy. Rather than being a sign that something is wrong, shedding is an essential part of how dogs and cats maintain their coats.

Every hair on a dog’s or cat’s body goes through a natural life cycle. It grows from a hair follicle, stops growing after a period of time, and eventually falls out so that a new hair can replace it. Because millions of hairs are at different stages of this cycle, pets are constantly shedding small amounts of fur. This continuous replacement removes old, damaged hairs and keeps the coat healthy and effective at protecting the skin.

Shedding also plays an important role in regulating body temperature. Many dogs and cats grow a thick undercoat during winter to trap warm air close to the body. As spring arrives, they shed much of this extra fur so they can stay cooler during the warmer months. Interestingly, changes in daylight are one of the main signals that trigger seasonal shedding, even more so than temperature itself.

Some pets shed far more than others because of their genetics. Double-coated breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, and Maine Coons, have a thick insulating undercoat that is released in large amounts during seasonal coat changes. In contrast, breeds like Poodles and Shih Tzus have continuously growing hair, so they shed much less but require regular grooming instead.

Indoor pets often shed throughout the entire year. Heating, air conditioning, and artificial lighting reduce the natural seasonal cues their bodies rely on, so instead of shedding heavily only twice a year, they lose smaller amounts of fur almost every day.

A healthy diet is also important for a healthy coat. Hair is made mainly from keratin, a protein, so pets need enough high-quality protein as well as essential fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6, to maintain strong, shiny fur.

Stress can also cause pets to shed much more than usual, even if they are otherwise healthy. Many different situations can trigger this response, including illness, long trips, moving to a new home, or even a visit to the veterinarian. During stressful periods, a pet’s body may shift more hairs into the shedding phase, leading to noticeable hair loss over the following days or weeks. Fortunately, this type of shedding is usually temporary. Once the source of stress is removed and the pet feels safe, comfortable, and healthy again, the coat will gradually return to its normal shedding pattern.

Although shedding is normal, excessive hair loss is not. If your pet develops bald patches, constantly scratches, or has red, flaky, or irritated skin, the problem may be caused by allergies, parasites, infections, or hormonal disorders, and a veterinarian should be consulted.

While you can’t stop dogs and cats from shedding completely, regular brushing, good nutrition, proper grooming, and routine veterinary care can greatly reduce loose hair and keep the coat in excellent condition. In the end, every strand of fur that falls out is simply part of a remarkable natural system that keeps your pet’s coat healthy, comfortable, and ready for every season.
