If you pay attention, you’ll notice that most cameras—whether on smartphones or professional devices—use lenses that are round. However, the photos taken are always rectangular or square. This leads many people to wonder: why is the lens round, but the image doesn’t match its shape?
The answer lies in the difference between the design of the lens and the image sensor inside the camera. The lens is round because optical lenses are typically manufactured in a circular shape to optimize their ability to gather light from multiple directions. The round design helps light enter evenly, reduces distortion, minimizes vignetting (darkened edges), and ensures the best possible image quality. Additionally, producing round lenses is simpler and more efficient than making lenses in more complex shapes.
However, the light captured by the lens goes to another important component: the image sensor. The sensor receives the light and converts it into data to create a digital image. Unlike the lens, the sensor is usually designed as a rectangle or square for technical and practical reasons. When the light passes through the lens and reaches the sensor, only the portion of light that falls within the rectangular area of the sensor is recorded. The light outside that area, even if it entered through the lens, is discarded.
In addition to technical reasons, rectangular or square images are more suitable for how we use and display pictures in real life. Screens on phones, computers, TVs, as well as books and newspapers, are all designed in rectangular proportions. When the photo is already shaped this way, it becomes easier and more intuitive to display, share, edit, or print.
Therefore, although camera lenses are round to optimize light collection, the final shape of the image is determined by the sensor. Since sensors are typically rectangular or square, the resulting photos reflect that shape. This is the result of a combination of optical efficiency and practical usability, demonstrating the thoughtful and logical design behind modern imaging devices.
