If you are an ordinary worker in Vietnam, looking back over more than three decades from 1990 to the present, you will find a rare moment when “one tael of gold” and “the average annual income of a Vietnamese person” stood so close to each other that they almost touched. That moment came in the late 1990s, specifically around 1998.
At that time, the economy had just gone through the early years of the Reforms. Living standards were still difficult, but the gap in assets had not yet been stretched too wide. Vietnam’s GDP per capita then was just over 360 USD a year, while the price of one tael of gold, converted from the world gold price, was also approximately 350 USD. In other words, an average worker, if they saved almost their entire income for a year, could theoretically buy one tael of gold.
What is worth noting is that this was not because gold was cheap, but because both income and gold prices were “low and close to each other.” At that time, gold had not yet taken on the image of a heavily inflated speculative or safe-haven asset as it would later, while Vietnamese incomes were just enough to cover the most basic needs of daily life.
Entering the 2000s, and especially after 2008, the picture changed rapidly. Average income rose steadily, reflecting economic growth and urbanization, but gold prices rose faster, particularly during periods of global financial crisis. By years such as 2009 or 2011, even though average income had reached around 1,200–1,900 USD per year, the price of one tael of gold had surged to a similar level, or even higher, making the feeling of “chasing after gold” increasingly evident for workers.
As time went on, this gap widened further when viewed through the lens of everyday life. Income increased, but so did living costs, while gold increasingly became a symbol of accumulation and asset protection, no longer something that could be bought simply by saving for a year.
Of course, this is only a rough comparison, based on GDP per capita and gold prices converted from international markets. It does not accurately reflect actual household income, living expenses, or income inequality among different social groups. Gold prices in Vietnam can also differ significantly from world prices due to exchange rates, regulatory policies, and domestic supply and demand.
Even so, with this simplified perspective, the picture still reveals a thought-provoking reality: the time when gold prices were closest to the average income of Vietnamese people did not occur during periods of soaring gold prices or economic booms, but in a quieter moment in the late 1990s, when both income and gold stood at a low level, reflecting an economy that was still poor but had not yet been sharply stretched by today’s levels of asset inequality.
