Bahrain, a wealthy island nation in Asia, famous for its glass towers and Formula 1 races, hides a secret that has existed for 400 years in the barren desert.
When mentioning Bahrain, most visitors immediately think of the glass skyscrapers in the capital Manama, the race cars of Formula 1, or the bustle of the souqs — where lively bargaining echoes around stalls of spices and pearls. But just drive south, pass the last clusters of houses, and the vibrant urban sounds gradually disappear. Visitors will encounter a flat, open space stretching almost endlessly across the desert.
A solitary tree appears against the sandy background, with no greenery or water source around it. Locals call it the Tree of Life — Shajarat al-Hayat.
Shajarat al-Hayat stands nearly 10 meters tall, its canopy wide enough to provide shade for visitors under the scorching heat. It has survived for nearly 400 years in what seems “almost impossible” conditions amid the arid desert sands. Within a radius of nearly one kilometer, there are no streams, rivers, or other vegetation growing.
The mystery of its survival has turned the Tree of Life into a legend for centuries, a must-see destination for most visitors setting foot in this wealthy Asian island nation.
For visitors, the tree’s existence raises many questions: How can a tree live that long without rivers, rainfall, or irrigation systems? Why can it take root in such a harsh place? And why has it become a revered symbol for the people of Bahrain? Part of the answer lies in science; the rest belongs to faith and legend.
Shajarat al-Hayat’s scientific name is Prosopis cineraria, belonging to the genus Prosopis, which mainly grows in the Americas and is commonly known as mesquite (the “devil tree”). Prosopis cineraria, however, originates from Asia and is renowned for its exceptional adaptability in arid desert environments. It can grow in conditions with very low annual rainfall, about 150 mm per year. The key factor lies in its deep root system, which can extend 40–50 meters underground to reach groundwater. Its small leaves are coated with wax to retain every drop of moisture, and its bark is structured to withstand extreme heat.
However, for many Bahrainis, science cannot fully explain it. Through generations, they believe the tree’s life is a blessing, even a remnant of the Garden of Eden in legend. The Tree of Life is associated with memories, pride, and ancient stories, becoming a symbol of the resilience of the Bahraini people against harsh natural conditions.
For those who once led camels across the desert, the Tree of Life was not only a legend but a matter of survival. It provided shade when there was nowhere else to shelter or rest, and it served as a landmark to prevent getting lost in the sea of sand.
Today, many visitors say that standing beneath its canopy brings a unique experience — both captivating and mysterious. The tree is not only a geographical landmark but has become part of Bahrain’s cultural life, appearing in artworks, jewelry, and souvenirs.
Schools in Bahrain organize student visits here, considering it a practical lesson about adaptability and the vitality of nature.
The tree lies deep in the desert, about 35–40 km from the capital Manama. If visitors drive directly from the city, the journey takes about 45 minutes. There is no bus route reaching the site, so most visitors rent a car for the day or take a taxi.
Each year, the tree receives around 50,000 visitors. Due to incidents of tourists carving and drawing on the trunk, causing damage, Bahraini authorities have erected a protective fence around it.
Bahrain lies in the Persian Gulf, consisting of the main island of Bahrain and about 30 smaller surrounding islands. Its name derives from the Arabic al-bahrayn (“two seas”). The island nation covers more than 780 km², about 1.3 times the area of Phu Quoc Island. It has no natural rivers; its terrain is mainly desert with low rainfall. Residents rely primarily on groundwater and seawater desalination to meet daily needs.
Located in one of the world’s most important oil-producing regions, Bahrain’s own oil reserves are modest. Its economy mainly depends on refining and processing crude oil imported from neighboring countries. In recent years, the island nation has gradually shifted toward finance, trade services, and media sectors.
Bahrain has a population of more than 1.6 million people. Its GDP (PPP) reached 108 billion USD (2025 data), and its Human Development Index (HDI) ranks 38th globally.
