Just a few years ago, in the final days of the twelfth lunar month, a familiar sight was long lines of people waiting at ATMs. This was, of course, easy to understand, as pre-Tet spending needs, along with the demand for lucky money at the beginning of the year, prompted many people to take advantage of their short holiday breaks to withdraw cash. Sometimes they had to queue for an entire hour, anxiously worrying that the machine might run out of money or temporarily stop working.
Yet this image has disappeared, or at least become far less common, this year and likely in the years to come. The reason lies in the widespread use of QR codes and other forms of electronic payment. From coffee shops and supermarkets to flower stores and fruit stalls at local markets, small boards printed with bank transfer codes can be seen everywhere. With just a few taps on a smartphone, payments are completed. Even online lucky money has gradually become familiar, especially among the younger generation. This convenience reduces the pressure on cash usage, lessens overcrowding, and partly reflects a lifestyle that is changing day by day.
Even so, amid these changes, there are still familiar things that seem never to disappear.
Outside, in front of car wash shops, long lines of motorbikes and cars queue one after another. Some people wait for hours just to have their vehicles cleaned and polished. After a year of hard work, the vehicle – a daily companion – is also carefully “taken care of” as a way of preparing for the new year. Sprays of water, soap bubbles, the hum of engines, and bursts of laughter together create a scene that is distinctly typical of the year’s end.
At the markets, red and yellow colors still dominate. Peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, and kumquat trees are displayed everywhere. Adults bustle about shopping, while children excitedly follow their parents. The aroma of bánh chưng, bánh tét, candied fruits, and roasted sunflower seeds evokes an indescribable sense of familiarity. Whether paying with cash or scanning a QR code, that bustling, festive feeling remains unchanged.
Tet, therefore, is always an intersection between the old and the new. Some images gradually fade into memory, like the long lines at ATMs; yet other scenes endure over time: crowded beauty salons, overloaded car wash shops, vibrant flower markets. Amid the pace of modern life, the days before Tet still preserve a distinctive spirit – both familiar and changing, both eagerly anticipated and quietly reflective, reminding us that another year is gently coming to a close.
