Every year on February 14, when bright red roses and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are exchanged, people celebrate Valentine’s Day as a festival of love. However, few realize that the origin of this day began with a tragic story in ancient Rome — where love was once forbidden by the authority of an emperor.
In the 3rd century AD, the Roman Empire under the rule of Claudius II was constantly engaged in wars. According to legend, the emperor believed that unmarried men would make braver and more devoted soldiers, since they were not bound by family ties. Therefore, he issued a decree banning young men from marrying, even preventing engagements. In that context, love and marriage were regarded as obstacles to military duty.
Amid such harsh circumstances, a priest named Valentine quietly defied the emperor’s order. He believed that marriage was sacred and that love was a gift that should not be taken away from humanity. Despite the danger, Valentine secretly performed wedding ceremonies for young couples in love. When his actions were discovered, he was arrested.
During his imprisonment, legend has it that he befriended the jailer’s daughter and left her a letter signed “From your Valentine” before his execution. On February 14, 269 (or 270, according to some records), he was put to death. His death was not only a punishment by the authorities, but also became a symbol of courage and sacrifice for love.
In 496, Pope Gelasius I officially designated February 14 as Saint Valentine’s Day. Over many centuries, the day gradually transformed from a religious commemoration into an occasion for couples to express their affection. In medieval Europe, people believed that mid-February marked the season when birds began to pair off, further associating February 14 with romance.
One of the most familiar symbols of Valentine’s Day today is chocolate. The tradition of giving chocolate on this occasion became popular in the 19th century. In 1868, the company Cadbury in England produced the first heart-shaped chocolate boxes specifically for Valentine’s Day. From then on, chocolate became a signature gift of the holiday. Its sweet flavor symbolizes tenderness and loving emotions, while certain components in chocolate, such as phenylethylamine, are believed to stimulate feelings of happiness — often associated with the sensation of being in love.
Today, Valentine’s Day is not only for couples but also an opportunity for people to show appreciation to family and friends. From an imperial decree banning love in ancient Rome, the story of Saint Valentine has endured through time to become a symbol of the right to love and to live with sincere affection. And each box of chocolate exchanged on February 14 seems to carry the memory of a priest who once dared to sacrifice himself to protect love.
