Denmark – Just a 40-minute train ride from central Copenhagen, Frederiksborg Castle in the town of Hillerød appears, majestically situated on three small islets on Castle Lake.
The entire exterior of Frederiksborg Castle is built from red brick, highlighted by turquoise spires and hundreds of arched windows.
The structure was built by King Christian IV in the early 17th century and is the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia, combining Renaissance architecture with fine craftsmanship. From the 17th to the 19th century, Frederiksborg Castle was often used as a royal residence by King Christian IV and King Frederik VII.
VisitDenmark, the national tourism promotion agency of Denmark, lists Frederiksborg Castle among the 12 most magnificent Renaissance castles in Scandinavia.
Once a fortress, the castle is surrounded by a system of moats. Today, the moats no longer serve defensive purposes but have become a scenic highlight.
Right in the main courtyard stands the Neptune Fountain, completed in 1622. The original was taken by the Swedish army during the Dano-Swedish War (1658–1660) and is now displayed at Drottningholm Palace (located on Lovön island, outside Stockholm, Sweden).
During this war, Sweden (under King Charles X Gustav) invaded most of Denmark. The Neptune Fountain, which symbolized the power of King Christian IV (Denmark), was seized by the Swedish army as war booty.
This replica was erected in 1888.
A major fire in 1859 destroyed much of the castle’s interior, but the Chapel (Frederiksborg Chapel) remained intact. This was where Danish kings were anointed and crowned during the era of absolute monarchy (1660–1848).
After the fire, the royal family decided not to use the castle as a residence. J. C. Jacobsen, founder of Carlsberg Brewery, proposed establishing a national history museum here and funded the reconstruction. Since 1878, the castle has been an independent part of the Carlsberg Foundation.

Although the stone has darkened over hundreds of years, every sculpted detail—from statues in wall niches to arched vaults—still preserves the sharp lines that showcase the masterful skill of the craftsmen.
The ceiling features gold-gilded carvings, the walls display woven tapestries and large portraits. Natural light shining through the tall windows highlights the room’s opulence.

The exhibition rooms preserve 500 years of Danish history through thousands of portraits, historical paintings, furniture pieces, and sculptures.
Visitors can admire portraits of Johan Friedrich Struensee and Queen Caroline Mathilde by painter Jens Juel, as well as works by Karel van Mander, Wilhelm Marstrand, P. S. Krøyer, and Niels Strøbæk.

On the walls are hundreds of crests and coats of arms representing both the royal family and notable Danes such as Mærsk McKinney Møller and Niels Bohr.

Frederiksborg Castle is a 40-minute journey from central Copenhagen, suitable for a half-day excursion.
Visitors simply need to take the S-train (Line A) to Hillerød Station. From the station, you can walk through the old streets of Hillerød to reach the castle, or take a local bus (Route 301 toward Ullerød or Route 302 toward Sophienlund) and get off at the “Frederiksborg Slot” stop. If departing from Vietnam, starting from November, travelers can book direct flights with Vietnam Airlines to Copenhagen, then follow the above route to visit this iconic landmark.
