An age-old question: Should you brush your teeth before or after breakfast?

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

An age-old question that many people continue to debate is: Should you brush your teeth before or after breakfast? Some believe it is better to brush after eating to remove any food left behind. Others prefer to brush as soon as they wake up before having breakfast. So, which choice is actually better for your oral health?

According to dental experts, if you have to choose one, brushing your teeth before breakfast is the more strongly recommended option.

Throughout the night, bacteria continue to multiply in your mouth and form plaque on your teeth. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), brushing immediately after waking up removes these bacteria while coating your teeth with a protective layer of fluoride before you eat or drink. This protective layer helps your enamel resist the acids produced when bacteria break down carbohydrates in food.

Dr. Kevin Faist, a general and cosmetic dentist, explains that after we eat—especially foods rich in sugar or carbohydrates—the bacteria in our mouths quickly produce acids. Within just a few minutes, the pH of saliva drops significantly. When the pH falls below approximately 5.5, tooth enamel begins to demineralize and becomes softer than normal.

Although saliva naturally neutralizes acids, this process usually takes about 30 minutes, and it may take as long as 60 minutes if your breakfast includes acidic foods or drinks such as coffee, oranges, citrus fruits, or fruit juice.

That is why experts recommend not brushing your teeth immediately after breakfast. When enamel has been softened by the acidic environment, brushing can wear it away more easily. If you still prefer to brush after breakfast, you should wait at least 30–60 minutes to give your saliva enough time to restore the pH to a safe level.

This advice is especially important for people who are at a higher risk of enamel damage, such as those with dry mouth, acid reflux, or a habit of breathing through their mouths. These individuals typically have a lower resting salivary pH, causing their enamel to remain softened for longer after meals.

However, experts also emphasize that the timing of brushing is not the only deciding factor. Even more important are using proper brushing techniques, brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, and maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing at least twice a day.

So, if you want to protect your enamel as effectively as possible, brush your teeth before breakfast. If you enjoy the feeling of a clean mouth after eating, simply be patient and wait about 30–60 minutes before picking up your toothbrush. A small change to your morning routine could help keep your teeth healthier for many years to come.

  1. I myself have a habit of brushing my teeth right after waking up because every time I wake up, I feel like my mouth doesn’t smell very fresh, which makes breakfast unpleasant.
