Exploring the dark side of cross-border scam networks, The Journey of Heroes has attracted attention with its brutal action scenes and its portrayal of people who fall victim to “easy jobs with high salaries” scams. However, the film also reveals its weaknesses as it attempts to explore too many characters and storylines.
Directed by Dương Bảo Anh, The Journey of Heroes does not introduce an entirely new subject, but it impresses with its large-scale production, featuring more than 700 extras.
The 135-minute film revolves around Ny (played by Steven Nguyễn), a young man from a poor rural area in the Mekong Delta. The tragedy begins when his younger sister, Út Đẹt (Huỳnh Minh Kiên), and her close friend are lured by promises of easy work and attractive salaries. Instead of finding a better life, they fall into the hands of a cross-border scam organization. Determined to rescue his sister, Ny deliberately allows himself to be captured and taken into the camp.
One of the film’s most outstanding strengths lies in its intense, fast-paced action sequences. The fight scenes are presented in a realistic, raw style, emphasizing the pain and desperation of people pushed to the edge.
However, The Journey of Heroes is not simply a martial arts film but one that strongly focuses on survival. Ny is not portrayed as an invincible hero. There are moments when he becomes exhausted, collapses, and seems unable to continue fighting.
The violent scenes are not merely intended to create tension but also help expose the brutal way the camp operates. From severe beatings to relentless pursuits, the level of violence gradually increases, turning the place into what can only be described as hell on earth.
Beyond the action, the film also explores human compassion under extreme circumstances. Victims who were once strangers are forced to depend on one another to survive. The bonds between siblings, maternal love, and mutual sympathy become sources of strength that help them overcome their fear and find ways to fight back against those controlling their lives.
Through this, the film conveys the message that survival is not just about staying alive but also about preserving one’s humanity and kindness, even when pushed to the limits of endurance.
Inside the camp, there is a mother who endures repeated beatings just to remain with her disabled son, a husband who helplessly watches his wife become a target of the guards, and victims who choose to compromise, gradually becoming part of the very scam operation that once imprisoned them.
Despite their different circumstances, they have all been deprived of their freedom and identities. They are no longer called by their names but are identified only by numbers printed on their clothes. Every day, the victims are forced to carry out scams to meet the sales targets set by the camp’s managers.
Through these stories, the film raises a thought-provoking question: When people are stripped of their freedom and dignity and pushed to the depths of despair, will they choose to resist or surrender?
In terms of acting, Steven Nguyễn leaves a strong impression with his portrayal of Ny as a quiet, tough, and decisive young man. Although the character is given limited opportunities to express his inner emotions, his instinct to protect his younger sister at all costs remains clear.
Veteran actress Như Quỳnh delivers emotional moments in her role as a mother who risks everything to find her son. Meanwhile, Quách Ngọc Ngoan gives a convincing performance as Tài, the cold-hearted and ruthless manager of the camp.
Another strength of the film is its set design. Strong fences, metal cages, and enclosed workspaces create a suffocating atmosphere in which victims are constantly monitored and controlled.
The film also recreates various modern scam techniques, ranging from impersonation calls designed to steal money to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to fake people’s faces and voices.
Nevertheless, the ambition to tell too many stories ultimately becomes one of the film’s weaknesses. According to film critic Lucas Luân Nguyễn, the considerable amount of screen time devoted to different supporting characters means that the psychological development of the main character, Ny, is not explored deeply enough.
In addition, the excessive use of flashback scenes, although helpful in explaining the characters’ backgrounds and motivations, sometimes interrupts the flow of the story and reduces the tension.
Despite its script-related weaknesses, The Journey of Heroes has continued to attract audiences thanks to its timely subject matter, spectacular action sequences, and message about human compassion in the face of adversity.
