Will AI be profitable?

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

Few people still doubt that AI will change the world. The question troubling investors now is a much more practical one: AI is consuming an enormous amount of money, but when will it actually start generating profits?

The scale of this race may come as a shock. According to Goldman Sachs, total AI-related investment worldwide could exceed $1 trillion in 2026 alone. Meanwhile, Oxford Economics estimates that the wave of AI-related investment could reach around $3.8 trillion between 2024 and 2028.

This is because AI is not simply a piece of software that can be created once and then distributed to millions of people at very little additional cost.

Behind every question we send to a chatbot lies a massive system consisting of expensive AI chips, data centers, servers, power grids, cooling systems, and enormous amounts of electricity. To serve more users, companies have to keep buying more chips, building more data centers, and finding more sources of energy.

And that is precisely the problem: Money is being poured into AI far faster than AI itself is bringing money in.

In fact, the revenues of leading AI companies are growing at an astonishing rate. OpenAI was reported to have reached more than $40 billion in annualized revenue in 2026. Anthropic is also growing rapidly and is on track to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue.

Those are enormous figures for relatively young companies. But when compared with the trillions of dollars being invested in chips, data centers, electricity, and other infrastructure, they raise an unavoidable question:

When will the money coming in catch up with the money being spent?

Of course, this does not mean that AI is a worthless bubble.

History has seen a similar story before with the Internet. In the late 1990s, investors believed that the Internet would transform the way people shopped, communicated, worked, entertained themselves, and did business. They were right. Today, Amazon, Google, and Meta are all empires built on the Internet.

But many investors at the time still lost their money.

The reason is simple: correctly predicting the future does not mean that every price or every investment in that future is reasonable.

When the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, numerous Internet companies went bankrupt, causing investors to suffer heavy losses and wiping out trillions of dollars in market value over the following years.

When the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s, countless Internet companies disappeared and trillions of dollars in market value were wiped out. The Internet did not fail. The real problem was excessively high expectations and valuations.

AI today may be facing a similar paradox.

Technology giants do not dare stop investing because they believe AI could become part of the infrastructure of the future economy. If that happens, companies that fail to build their AI capabilities today risk being left behind. That is why Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Google, and many other corporations continue to spend enormous sums on data centers and AI chips.

In this race, however, the clearest winners so far may actually be the companies selling “shovels” to the gold miners.

NVIDIA is a striking example. As the whole world races to build AI, NVIDIA sells the chips needed to run it. The company’s revenue rose from around $60.9 billion in fiscal 2024 to $130.5 billion in 2025 and $215.9 billion in 2026. Its data center business alone generated nearly $193.7 billion in fiscal 2026.

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, presents an AI chip at a technology event. NVIDIA is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the wave of investment in artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA has therefore demonstrated one thing: AI can certainly generate enormous profits for some businesses.

But the bigger question remains unanswered.

Can companies that directly provide AI models earn enough money from users and businesses to cover the enormous cost of training and running them? Will the hundreds of billions of dollars being spent on data centers every year generate commensurate returns? And more importantly, will future demand for AI really be as great as the market is betting on today?

It may take many more years before we have the answer.

But one thing is worth remembering: a technology can truly change the world while many of the people who invest in it still lose money. The Internet has already proved that. And AI may do the same.
