In recent days, the surface of Ha Long Bay has become more vibrant with the appearance of brilliant crimson sails gliding among the majestic limestone islands. This is not only a new tourism product but also an effort to restore a distinctive cultural memory of the coastal region of Quang Ninh.
The Return of a Quang Yen Symbol
Since February 1, three wooden sailboats, each over 10 meters long, have begun operating along the coastal road area, stretching from Bai Tho Bridge to behind the Quang Ninh Museum. According to a representative of the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, this initiative is part of a plan to reintroduce traditional sailing boats into tourism activities in order to diversify visitor experiences and honor local cultural values.
This product is the result of years of preparation. The boats were built by renowned artisans, based on the original model of the “three-compartment boat” — a type of fishing and transport boat closely associated with the history of residents in the Ha Nam island area of Quang Yen Town.
Awakening pride and nostalgia
The reappearance of these sails has received enthusiastic support from the local community. On social media forums, many people have shared their emotional reactions upon seeing a symbolic image of their homeland return. For them, the sails are not merely vessels but representations of the resilient yet hardworking spirit of the fishing communities.
Vu Linh, a resident of Ha Long, shared that the image of the sailboat has long been a familiar subject in the minds of coastal children through art drawings. Amid the rapid development of modern and luxurious superyachts, the reintroduction of traditional sails has created a meaningful pause filled with nostalgia.
Although there have been some discussions about the current red sails differing from the original dark brown color of the 1990s, the majority of visitors and residents agree that the red hue helps the boats stand out against the lush green limestone mountains, creating a striking aesthetic highlight for Ha Long Bay.
