Bun cha stalls and sidewalk tea stands in Hanoi 30–40 years ago are portrayed with warmth and simplicity through the lenses of foreign photographers.
Dutch photographer Ab Stokvis photographed a shop selling fertilized duck eggs in the 1980s. The long wooden bench and the floral-patterned tablecloth were familiar sights in the daily lives and businesses of local people at the time.
Many shops and street stalls in Hanoi during that period needed little more than a hand-painted sign and a few wooden tables and chairs, yet they held countless memories for residents. Photographs capturing the rhythm of life in the capital from that era are often shared in photography communities.
American photographer William E. Crawford photographed two men drinking green tea at a sidewalk stall next to a lighter-gas refill stand at No. 8 Ly Thai To Street in 1988.

William Crawford was one of the first Western photographers to visit northern Vietnam after the war ended. He first came to Hanoi in 1985 with a group of filmmakers and American veterans and returned many times afterward. He photographed the streets and everyday activities of local people to document the city’s transformation in the post-war period. Crawford’s works have been exhibited in both the United States and Vietnam and are featured in the photo book Hanoi Streets 1985–2015: In the Years of Forgetting (2018).

American freelance photographer Andy Tarica captured a bún chả stall on a Hanoi sidewalk in 1995. He said he loved the street life of the capital and was particularly impressed by the food stalls furnished with just a few small plastic stools.
Japanese photographer Yuichi Kobayashi photographed tea stalls and food vendors on Hang Bong Street in 1998.
He first visited Hanoi in February 1995 and spent much of his time wandering through the city’s streets, documenting everyday life. On his personal page, the photographer frequently shares images of Hanoi’s scenery, people, and traffic from more than 30 years ago.
