[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]
Going to the bathroom is, in itself, one of life’s enjoyable experiences. Especially when you’ve been holding it in for a long time. And the Japanese, with their constant desire to take every experience to the next level, have found a way to make that moment of bliss even more memorable: letting you admire a panoramic view of Osaka while answering nature’s call.
This special place is located on the 59th floor of Abeno Harukas, one of the most prominent buildings in Osaka, Japan.

Standing 300 meters tall with 60 floors above ground, Abeno Harukas houses shopping centers, offices, a hotel, an art museum, and the Harukas 300 observation deck. The top three floors, from the 58th to the 60th, are designed to offer visitors panoramic views of Osaka from above.
Yet, within such a magnificent architectural landmark, there is one place that is rather modest in function but anything but modest when it comes to the view: the restroom on the 59th floor.
Normally, when you step into a restroom, all you see are four walls, a mirror, and perhaps a few advertisements. But here, enormous glass windows reveal a cityscape stretching all the way to the horizon. Skyscrapers, busy streets, and thousands of rooftops appear tiny beneath your feet.
Just imagine: you walk in carrying a burden that’s hard to talk about, but only a few minutes later, you can walk out feeling lighter, with a refreshed spirit and a broader perspective.
The experience becomes even more special at night, when all of Osaka lights up with millions of sparkling lights. Even washing your hands after using the restroom can turn into a romantic experience. There are probably few places in the world where people would want to linger by the sink for quite so long.

Of course, the spectacular view is mainly available from the sink area and other shared spaces, rather than from inside the enclosed toilet stalls. The Japanese are still thoughtful enough to understand that there are moments in life when, no matter how beautiful the scenery may be, people need a little privacy.
Japan has long been famous for its smart toilets, equipped with features such as heated seats, automatic flushing, washing, and drying. It seems that, to the Japanese, going to the bathroom is not merely a biological necessity, but also an area worthy of technological investment and creativity.

However, there is one thing worth noting: this restroom is located within the Harukas 300 observation deck, which normally requires visitors to purchase an admission ticket. So, if you come here solely to answer nature’s call, you may end up paying quite a high price for just a few minutes of relief.
But if you ever have the chance to visit Osaka, consider experiencing this extraordinary restroom. After all, some of life’s pleasures are remarkably simple, and sometimes, the greatest joy comes from finally letting go of things you’ve been trying so hard to hold inside for far too long.
So, there you have it. In Japan, even answering nature’s call can open up a whole new horizon.
