In a city inherently famous for its extravagant architecture, the Tree of Prosperity still has enough visual impact to make many visitors stop and look up. This remarkable attraction is located at Wynn Macau, near Grand Lisboa, and is considered one of Macau’s most famous shows.
The tree stands about 11 meters tall, with 60 main branches, more than 2,000 smaller branches, and as many as 98,000 leaves. What makes it particularly special is that the leaves are made from 24-karat gold leaf and brass leaf, making the entire canopy glow with a brilliant golden color under the lighting system. The spectacular attraction was part of Wynn Macau’s US$260 million expansion project, which included the Tree of Prosperity and other new facilities.
But the Tree of Prosperity is more than just a giant tree sculpture.
When the show begins, a mechanical system slowly raises the tree from beneath the floor of the Rotunda. Music plays and the lighting constantly changes, while the ceiling above features symbols of the 12 animals of the Eastern zodiac and the 12 signs of the Western zodiac. The colors of the tree also change to evoke the four seasons of the year.
The entire show lasts about seven minutes. According to current information from the Macao Government Tourism Office, the show runs from 12 a.m. to 10 p.m., once every hour.
So, how much does it cost to admire this masterpiece? The answer may be the most surprising part: nothing at all. The Tree of Prosperity is a free public show at Wynn Macau.
The name “Tree of Prosperity” is no coincidence either. In Asian culture, a lush tree is often associated with growth, development, and longevity, while the color gold is linked to wealth and fortune. The tree was therefore created as a symbol of prosperity, good luck, and abundance.
Perhaps it is this combination of art, technology, and cultural meaning that has made the attraction so popular with visitors. In 2024, the Macau Daily Times reported that the Tree of Prosperity attracted such large crowds that big tour groups had to be divided into smaller groups to ensure capacity limits and safety.
Interestingly, on social media, the Tree of Prosperity is sometimes described as “a tree made from more than one ton of solid gold.” However, this description is not accurate according to official sources. Both the Macao Government Tourism Office and Wynn’s promotional materials describe the 98,000 leaves as a combination of 24-karat gold leaf and brass leaf, rather than tens of thousands of leaves cast entirely from solid gold.
Even so, the Tree of Prosperity remains one of the most extravagant and unique attractions visitors can encounter in Macau: an 11-meter-tall golden tree bearing 98,000 shimmering leaves, slowly rising from beneath the ground amid music and lights – like a giant wish for wealth and prosperity.
