The film earned more than 60 billion VND after 10 days of release, with many keywords related to the movie trending in searches. On TikTok, several videos introducing the film’s locations have reached hundreds of thousands of views, attracting visitors to explore them.
One of the filming locations of Hẹn em ngày nhật thực is the Làng Sông Minor Seminary (Tuy Phước Commune, Gia Lai), which evokes a peaceful atmosphere at the beginning of the film, in scenes where the nuns carry out their service to God.
The more-than-170-year-old structure features distinctive Gothic architectural characteristics (a design style from the latter half of the Middle Ages in Western Europe) and was built by the French. Đoàn Thiên Ân—who plays Ân, the female lead—said that before filming, she spent a short time living there to prepare for her role. Every day, from four in the morning, she woke up with the nuns to pray, recite scriptures, garden, and take care of the children.
Quy Hòa leprosy village, Quy Nhơn (Gia Lai), was chosen as the setting for scenes where the nuns provide free medical examinations for local people.
Director Lê Thiện Viễn—formerly a photographer—said that the effort to carefully craft each frame was not meant to showcase technique, but rather to make light and color in the film become a storytelling language.
Hóc Gáo Parish Church (Đăk Lăk) is where the characters Ân and Thiên exchange their first promise.
This location is also where the scene of Ân celebrating Christmas alone was filmed, after Thiên goes to Hạnh Trí for work to build his career, forcing the two characters into a long-distance relationship.
Làng Lò, along the coastline in Hòa Hiệp Ward (Đăk Lăk), becomes the setting of Thiên’s life after he moves to Hạnh Trí. In the film, the scenes have warm tones with rows of red-tiled houses.
There is a segment where Thiên takes on manual labor on weekends, saving money in the hope of opening a tailor shop for Ân in the future.
The mountainous area of Bác Ái (Khánh Hòa) is where the total solar eclipse of 1995 takes place—one of the key plot points of the film. The crew carefully invested in styling and art direction, featuring vintage vehicles and signage from the 1990s.
Hóc Răm (Tây Hòa, Đăk Lăk) appears with brilliant golden rice fields and long-distance buses traveling back and forth.
The scene where the two characters part ways at a crossroads was also filmed in this land of “yellow flowers on green grass.”
The film revolves around the story of the main character, Thiên Ân, a Catholic girl living in the peaceful countryside of Trà Mây in the late 1980s. One day, she happens to meet Thiên—a young electrician who has come from another place—and they gradually develop feelings for each other.
Their love story unfolds in secrecy because Mrs. Hoa—Ân’s mother (performed by artist Lê Khanh)—opposes her daughter’s relationship with someone outside the faith. Deep down, she has already chosen the ideal son-in-law, Dr. Hải (Thanh Sơn), because he has a stable career and is close to the family. The conflict reaches its climax when Ân is forced to choose between filial duty and personal happiness.
