China – Leaving her dream job to care for her ailing parents, 27-year-old Yang Yanxi resigns from her dream airline job to return to Heilongjiang and raise pigs.
Before returning to her hometown, Yang had worked for over five years at Juneyao Airlines. Due to the nature of her job, she rarely visited her parents in Yixun, Heilongjiang Province, though she called them every day.
One day, during a video call, Yang noticed her mother had bandages wrapped around her chest. She then learned her mother had undergone multiple lipoma surgeries. Not long before, her father had needed a heart stent.
“At that moment, I felt immensely guilty for not being able to take care of my parents,” the 27-year-old shared.
In October 2022, she quit her job to return home—a decision met with fierce opposition from her father. The two had a cold war, and Yang had to stay at her aunt’s house for two months to “escape.”
Under pressure from her father, Yang attended an interview for a lecturer position in aviation at a university in Hengdian. After receiving a job offer, she returned home to celebrate the Lunar New Year. However, Hengdian was still too far from her hometown, preventing her from being close to her parents. As the only child, she felt being there for her parents in their old age was paramount.
“I had another big argument with my dad this time, but he finally understood,” she said.
Starting in April 2023, Yang began managing her uncle’s pig farm. She found the job to be tough, requiring her to constantly work—lighting the stove, feeding the pigs, bathing them, and cleaning up manure.
“I’m busy every day, spending all my time in the pigsty. My whole body and hair reek of the smell,” she shared.
However, compared to being a flight attendant, Yang prefers her current job as it allows her to be with her parents. “When I think about being able to help my family live better, I feel it’s meaningful and work with more enthusiasm,” she expressed.
In her rural hometown, most of her peers are already married. Moreover, she hesitates to meet others due to her unkempt appearance from working with pigs. To pass the time, she started making short videos documenting her life.
At first, her follower count grew slowly. Over the past two months, however, her channel has gained over 400,000 followers. She has attracted attention for giving up a dream job to do work not everyone dares to take on.
Many viewers have called her the “pig-raising beauty” and praised her filial piety.
In the last two months of 2024, thanks to pig sales and income from her short videos, she earned 200,000 yuan (approximately 700 million VND). “Most of my income now comes from social media, as pig farming barely breaks even and often doesn’t cover the wages of my two uncles,” Yang explained.
Additionally, her videos have boosted her visibility, enabling her to sell pigs at better prices. While it might take others a whole day to sell a pig, she often sells out in just two hours.
“Next month, I plan to open a specialty store. In the future, I want to expand the farm and venture into homestay businesses,” the former flight attendant shared.
