How does friendship change in older age?

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

When retiree Pat Mathews began planning her post-work life in an outer suburb of Melbourne, she realised something was missing: local friends. “You’re going to have a lonely life if you don’t do something,” she remembers telling herself.

For more than 30 years, Mathews, a divorcee, had worked long hours in the city. Her demanding schedule and two-hour commute meant she had barely exchanged more than a wave with her neighbours. Meanwhile, her closest friends were scattered hours away.

As people grow older, their circles of friends often become smaller. Friends move away, pass away or develop different interests. Retirement can also remove the daily interactions that once came naturally through work. Yet friendship remains essential to happiness and well-being. So how do people build meaningful relationships later in life?

For Mathews, making new friends required a deliberate effort. A self-professed introvert, she had become more cautious about relationships as she aged. Unlike her younger self, who readily accepted people at face value, she now understood that genuine friendship took time to develop.

As she approached retirement at 65, Mathews reduced her working week and joined local gardening groups and an evening book club. Gradually, casual conversations turned into shared activities, from exchanging homegrown produce to watching films and meeting for dinner.

Her plan paid off. Now in her 70s, Mathews has welcomed four new friends into her inner circle. “It’s a good thing to have something in common to start off a friendship,” she says.

Her understanding of friendship has also changed. When she was younger, she might have called someone a friend after only a brief acquaintance. Today, she uses the word more carefully. “Friends are people that come and go in my home. And I go to theirs.”

For 65-year-old Maria Govers, friendship has taken on a different significance through grief and loss. Over the past five years, she has experienced the deaths of her parents, her younger brother and Clara, her best friend of 30 years.

Clara was her soul mate, and her death left an emptiness that Govers believes will never entirely disappear. Yet sharing her grief with another of Clara’s oldest friends has brought them closer together.

Another unexpected friendship began during a single 14-hour shift working for the Australian Electoral Commission. Despite their different backgrounds, Govers and her colleague connected almost immediately. They stayed in touch through social media and began meeting for coffee and lunch. “I like the way she thinks. I like the way that she challenges me and the advice that she gives,” Govers says.

Her experience shows that meaningful friendships in older age do not always require similar backgrounds or decades of shared memories.

For 76-year-old Roger Dougan, making friends became a priority after he and his wife moved from Melbourne to Perth to be closer to family. Leaving old friends behind was difficult, especially because opportunities to meet new people were no longer as plentiful as they had been during his working years.

Rather than waiting for friendships to happen naturally, Dougan took action. He reconnected with former colleagues, played golf, cycled, swam and joined social activities at his new lifestyle village. He also volunteered his professional skills for residents’ committees.

One of his closest new friendships began with a joke.

During an inspection of the village, Dougan spotted a man named John coming out of the swimming pool. Although they had never met, he called out, “Are you training for the Olympics?”

“No. I went there last year,” John replied.

Six months later, when Dougan and his wife finally moved in, John greeted him warmly. “Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you for six months, Roger.”

The two men are now close friends, with a permanent Thursday lunch appointment.

For Dougan, age itself is not necessarily the greatest obstacle to friendship. What matters is being willing to approach others and take the first step. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” he says with a smile.

The experiences of Mathews, Govers and Dougan show that friendship does not become less important with age. Instead, its nature changes. Older people may become more selective, valuing trust, honesty and meaningful connections over the size of their social circle.

While making friends may require greater effort later in life, new relationships can still begin in unexpected ways: through a shared interest, a difficult experience or simply a conversation with a stranger.
