Nearly one Vietnamese person dies from cancer every five minutes

According to GLOBOCAN 2024 data published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Vietnam records 177,404 new cancer cases and 111,015 cancer-related deaths every year, meaning that on average, nearly one Vietnamese person dies from cancer every five minutes. In addition, 404,153 people are currently living with cancer within five years of being diagnosed.

Even more concerning, over the past 16 years, the number of new cancer cases in Vietnam has increased by 59%, while the number of cancer-related deaths has risen by about 35%. Experts warn that without effective measures for prevention and early detection, the country’s cancer burden will continue to grow.

Regarding cancer patterns by sex, lung cancer is currently the most common cancer among men, followed by colorectal, liver, stomach, and esophageal cancers. Meanwhile, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. It is also one of the cancers that has seen significant advances in treatment, with many patients surviving for more than five years—or even much longer—when they receive appropriate treatment.

One of the main reasons why Vietnam’s cancer mortality rate remains high is that many patients are diagnosed only after the disease has reached an advanced stage, when the tumor has already metastasized and the chances of successful treatment are greatly reduced. According to experts, Vietnam’s mortality-to-incidence ratio is currently about 63%, much higher than the 35–40% seen in developed countries, where people have better access to cancer screening programs and early diagnosis.

In addition, the cost of treatment places a heavy burden on patients and their families. A patient with lung cancer alone may have to spend nearly 170 million VND per year on treatment, while many advanced cancer drugs are still not fully covered by health insurance. This financial pressure forces many patients to discontinue treatment or even give up hope altogether.

Experts emphasize that many types of cancer can be cured or patients’ survival can be significantly extended if the disease is detected at an early stage. People are recommended to reduce major risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, being overweight, physical inactivity, and diets low in fruits and vegetables. In addition, people should receive HPV and hepatitis B vaccinations when appropriate, undergo regular health check-ups, and participate in recommended cancer screening programs to improve the chances of early detection and successful treatment.
