Nudefest is much like any other summer festival in England, with one unusual feature: most of the visitors do not wear clothes.
This year’s festival was held in the middle of summer in a wide, open field. Visitors queued at food stalls waiting to buy meals. Outside the beer tent, long tables were crowded with people chatting, while piano music drifted from a nearby area known as the Magic Teapot.
Inside the marquees, many guests listened to talks and discussions covering a variety of everyday subjects. Others chose to relax in hot tubs and saunas or take part in sports activities. Some stretched out on large cushions, while a nearby group practiced meditation. Across the grassy field, a horse-drawn carriage offered rides around the site. Some visitors joined guided walks or tours of a local cider farm. At the same time, drones hovered overhead, recording the festival from the air.
The annual gathering for people interested in naturism was established in 2007 by Andrew Welch, a spokesperson for British Naturism. This year’s event was held in late June and lasted for seven days at a spacious campsite in Somerset, a rural county in southwest England, with room for around 700 guests. People attended from different parts of the United Kingdom as well as from abroad.
Andrew explained that Nudefest is similar to any other summer festival, providing entertainment, food, drinks, and opportunities to relax. The main difference is that attendees remain unclothed whenever the weather is warm enough. He added that the festival is run in a respectful manner, with no inappropriate jokes or offensive behavior, because everyone there belongs to the same community and shares an appreciation for naturism. The aim is simply to enjoy a friendly, relaxed, and welcoming atmosphere.
According to Andrew, venue owners, suppliers, and entertainers frequently comment that festival-goers are among the friendliest people they have worked with.
Although music is not the festival’s main focus, the evenings are still full of energy. Live bands perform well-known hits from the 1990s along with popular songs requested by the audience. Nighttime entertainment also includes karaoke, disco dancing, and music quizzes. Tea is served throughout the day, allowing visitors to enjoy it whenever they like.
Jeremy, one of the participants, said he enjoys returning to Nudefest because it gives him the opportunity to reconnect with old friends while meeting new people. Richard said he appreciates both the excellent organization and the wide choice of activities. Charley, who has attended for three years in a row, described the festival as a safe place where people can experience freedom, express themselves, and build friendships.
At the festival, many people say they no longer feel embarrassed about being overweight, too slim, or not having the appearance of a model. They find it easy to begin conversations without worrying about being judged. As one visitor explained, “People here value the enjoyment of life much more than looks or money,” which is one of the main reasons they keep coming back.
