Products on e-commerce platforms are becoming more expensive

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

After years of attracting shoppers with low prices and generous subsidies, products sold on e-commerce platforms are becoming increasingly expensive. Many items are no longer cheaper than those sold in physical stores, and some even cost more despite discount vouchers being applied.

Data from market research firms show that the average selling price across the four major e-commerce platforms—Shopee, TikTok Shop, Lazada, and Tiki—has risen significantly over the past year. A report by YouNet ECI found that the average selling price in the fourth quarter of 2025 increased by about 33% compared with the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, data from Metric show that the average value of each product sold rose by nearly 26%, from around VND 103,760 in the second quarter of 2025 to more than VND 130,510 in the first quarter of 2026.

According to experts and online sellers, the main reason is the simultaneous increase in input costs, including raw materials, manufacturing, labor, transportation, warehousing, and packaging. At the same time, the cost of selling on e-commerce platforms has also risen as sellers have to pay commissions, advertising fees, promotional expenses, transaction processing fees, and various other charges. In some product categories, these combined costs can account for as much as 45% of the selling price.

In addition, many e-commerce platforms have raised their platform fees for certain product categories this year. Sellers say that, besides platform fees, they also have to bear higher advertising costs, affiliate marketing expenses, return-related costs, and operating expenses, making it increasingly difficult to keep prices as low as they were in the past.

Experts believe that the period when e-commerce platforms heavily subsidized prices to expand their market share is gradually coming to an end. The industry is now shifting its focus toward operational efficiency, meaning that product prices are increasingly reflecting their actual costs. In response to this trend, consumers are also changing their shopping habits by comparing prices across different channels, waiting for promotions when purchasing high-value products, or buying directly from stores if they can get a better deal.

To adapt to these changes, experts recommend that sellers focus on improving product quality, optimizing operating costs, and building strong brands rather than relying too heavily on paid advertising. Meanwhile, some e-commerce platforms have begun reducing fees for certain essential product categories and introducing AI-powered tools and data analytics to help sellers improve their business performance.
