Before Unikey, typing Vietnamese on a computer was a frustrating experience. In the 1990s, Vietnamese users had to rely on complicated and inefficient typing software such as VietKey, VPSKeys, and TCVN3. These programs were often unreliable, and required manual font switching, leading to compatibility issues across different platforms. Many users struggled with garbled text when sharing documents, making Vietnamese digital communication a challenge.
Realizing this difficulty, Pham Kim Long, a student at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, decided to develop a better solution. On March 26, 2000, he officially released Unikey, a lightweight, efficient, and completely free Vietnamese typing software. Unlike previous tools, Unikey was simple, stable, and worked seamlessly across different applications. It supported popular typing methods such as Telex and VNI, allowing users to type Vietnamese easily without worrying about font mismatches.
What makes Phạm Kim Long truly remarkable is not just his technical skill, but also his generosity. Instead of commercializing Unikey, he chose to offer it for free, ensuring that all Vietnamese people could benefit from it. Thanks to him, typing Vietnamese became effortless, whether for students, office workers, or anyone using a computer. His contribution even extended beyond Unikey, as its core engine was later integrated into Windows, macOS, and Linux input methods, making it a standard for Vietnamese typing worldwide.
More than two decades after its release, Unikey remains indispensable. Pham Kim Long’s selflessness and dedication have left a lasting impact, proving that one man’s generosity can change the lives of millions.
