Many young Britons spend over $1,500 a year hiring people to handle everyday chores such as changing light bulbs or inflating car tires.
A recent study by Halfords, a multinational retailer, revealed a shift in Britain from a “DIY” (do-it-yourself) culture to a “GOTDIT” trend (Get Others To Do It – hiring others to do things).
The survey found that Gen Z (born between 1997-2012) tends to hire help for simple household tasks. The 18-27 age group is most likely to spend the most money.
Specifically, nearly a quarter of respondents said they “don’t know how to change a light bulb.” Reasons varied, with 20% saying climbing ladders was too dangerous, and 21% admitting they “don’t know what a wrench looks like.” Even simple tasks like hanging a picture on the wall see 10% of people hiring help.
Statistics show that young people spend over $1,500 annually on such chores. This figure is much lower for other generations, such as $470 for Gen X (born 1965-1980) and $300 for Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964).
The Halfords survey also indicated that young people lack basic knowledge in many areas. Only 57% of Gen Z know how to inflate a car tire. Even fewer (35%) can replace windshield wipers, despite it being a simple task. Furthermore, 44% of respondents said they would pay someone to do it for them.
Andy Turbefield, an automotive expert at Halfords, said the survey highlights young people’s lack of ability to perform basic tasks. For instance, when looking at a car engine, only 34% of Gen Z can identify the battery, and 28% of Gen Y can locate the alternator. Compared to Baby Boomers and Gen X, with recognition rates of 45% and 47%, respectively, Gen Z and Gen Y significantly lag behind.
However, Wayne Perrey believes that proactive learning can help regain confidence and acquire practical skills that many people currently lack. The TV host recounted his experience teaching a basic drilling skills class to people in their 30s.
At first, participants were anxious. But after a few hours of guidance, they were able to install a shelf. From being hesitant, they became confident and excited about the task, showing significant improvement after just a few sessions.
To encourage young people to be more proactive in life, experts suggest parents should do the following from a young age:
- Always assign chores: Doing household tasks helps children learn new skills and take responsibility for activities that support the family.
- Encourage “hands-on” activities: Engaging in tasks such as woodworking, assembling furniture, gardening, or painting walls helps children familiarize themselves with tools and develop problem-solving skills.
- Provide opportunities to assist others: This allows children to practice basic skills, build confidence, and spend quality time with family members.
