Tens of tons of carp arrived at Binh Dien Wholesale Market in the early hours of the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, to be transported and distributed by traders to markets across the city.
At midnight, dozens of carp stalls at Binh Dien Wholesale Market (Binh Dong Ward) were bustling with buying and selling activities on the day of Kitchen God.
Binh Dien Market covers an area of about 30 hectares and is located at the western gateway of Ho Chi Minh City. It plays a vital role in supplying fresh seafood, livestock, poultry, and vegetables to the city and neighboring provinces.
Trinh Duy Tinh (31), owner of Phu Fish Warehouse, said that on this occasion he imported more than one ton of carp to serve people shopping for Kitchen Gods’ Day. “This year, sales are lower than in previous years. In past years, I imported 2–3 tons each season,” Mr. Tinh said.
According to Mr. Tinh, large carp are priced at 85,000 VND per kilogram, while smaller ones sell for 70,000 VND per kilogram.
A few dozen meters away is Linh Fish Warehouse, specializing in red Malaysian carp. Trader Nguyen Hoang Chuong said that this type of carp has a beautiful red color and is favored by many people despite its high price of up to 160,000 VND per kilogram. “I imported two tons and have already sold nearly all of them,” Mr. Chuong said.
The fish are placed in nylon bags and then filled with oxygen before being transported for sale to inner-city markets and neighboring provinces around Ho Chi Minh City.
Employees at the fish warehouses use carts to move the bags of fish to waiting trucks and three-wheeled vehicles inside the market for distribution.
The fish are packed in bags weighing 10–20 kilograms, then loaded onto vehicles for delivery.
When most of the fish have been sold, employees at the warehouses take a short nap after a night of continuous work.
According to folk beliefs, the ritual of worshipping Ong Cong Ong Tao (also known as the Kitchen Gods Festival) is held annually on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. People believe that after the ceremony, the Kitchen Gods return to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor on the events that have taken place in each household over the past year.
