[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]
Insomnia is one of the most common health problems among older adults. After the age of 60, sleep quality often declines noticeably. This condition is not only a consequence of aging but is also influenced by many different factors.
Brain aging
As people grow older, the areas of the brain responsible for regulating sleep gradually decline in function, while communication between nerve cells becomes less efficient. In addition, the accumulation of free radicals over time can damage blood vessels, reducing the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain. As a result, older adults tend to sleep more lightly, wake up easily during the night, have difficulty falling back asleep, or wake up earlier than usual.
Hormonal changes
In women after menopause, declining hormone levels can cause hot flashes, night sweats, and repeated interruptions to sleep. This reduces the amount of deep sleep and affects overall sleep quality.
Chronic diseases and medication side effects
Many chronic conditions commonly seen in older adults, such as joint disorders, diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, enlarged prostate, and high blood pressure, can cause pain or discomfort at night, making it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep.
In addition, restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea are also common in this age group, causing sleep to be interrupted multiple times during the night and reducing the amount of deep sleep.
Taking multiple medications over a long period can also affect sleep. Some antidepressants and medications containing corticosteroids may cause difficulty sleeping at night while making people excessively sleepy during the day. Interactions between multiple medications can further reduce sleep quality.
Changes in daily habits
After retirement or having more free time, many older adults tend to take long naps, sleep more during the day, or go to bed and wake up at irregular times. These habits can disrupt the body’s biological clock and gradually lead to chronic insomnia.
In addition, reduced physical activity means the body uses less energy, making it harder to feel naturally sleepy in the evening. Loneliness, stress, and reduced social interaction can also make it more difficult for older adults to fall asleep and sleep soundly.
Lack of sunlight exposure
Natural sunlight helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle and supports the production of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleepiness. Insufficient exposure to sunlight can disrupt the body’s biological clock and, consequently, affect sleep quality.
How can sleep be improved?
To sleep better, older adults should maintain consistent bedtimes and wake-up times every day, increase physical activity during the day, create a quiet and comfortable sleeping environment, and keep chronic conditions well under control. Some natural nutrients, such as blueberry and ginkgo biloba, may also help neutralize free radicals and contribute to improving insomnia.
If lifestyle changes and various measures fail to improve sleep, or if insomnia persists or becomes more severe, older adults should consult a medical specialist to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
