Harbin City in Heilongjiang Province holds a festival featuring the ritual of cutting ice on the river in preparation for the world’s largest ice lantern festival in January.
The 5th Ice Harvesting Festival of Harbin City began on December 7, attracting large numbers of visitors with many traditional rituals and performances. The event marks the beginning of the annual ice and snow festival season.
The opening ceremony started with an artistic performance combining music and traditional dances. This is the way northeastern China welcomes visitors, creating a lively atmosphere for the event.
The festival takes place along the Songhua River, a famous frozen river and a natural wonder of China.
Large numbers of residents and tourists come to take part in activities such as ice skating, winter games, and enjoying local food. The vibrant atmosphere makes the event a highlight of Harbin’s winter.
Dumplings are a simple, quick dish but indispensable at winter festivals, warming diners’ stomachs and reflecting the distinctive culinary culture of Harbin.
Local dishes such as stewed fish and grilled foods always appeal to international tourists. They not only get to taste the flavors of northeastern China but also feel the hospitality of local people.
At the festival, handicrafts such as handbags and decorative items made from fish skin are on display for sale. These products showcase the creativity and refined craftsmanship of Harbin’s residents.
Ice blocks—the highlight of the festival—are harvested from the Songhua River and lifted up amid the cheers of tourists.
Workers dressed in traditional costumes use sleds to transport massive ice blocks to the exhibition area, creating a lively festival scene.
“After the kick-off ceremony, we spend 20–30 days each month harvesting ice on the river. The colder it gets, the busier we become,” said Wang Zhan, a veteran ice cutter.
Ice carving is the most popular activity at the festival. Artisans guide visitors in shaping large blocks of ice, helping them create works that bear their own personal mark.
After this opening event, lantern exhibitions and ice sculpture displays continue from December 10 through March of the following year, if the weather permits. The highlight is the festival at Harbin Ice and Snow World Park, which features ice sculptures, ice castles, ice slides, a giant Ferris wheel, nighttime performances, and many exciting ice activities, opening in early January.
