Pino, a mechanic who only finished eighth grade, built a charcoal-powered engine for his old car when the United States cut off Cuba’s fuel supply.
At his auto workshop in Aguacate, a town of 5,000 people about 70 km from Havana, Juan Carlos Pino is adjusting his 1980 Fiat Polski, manufactured in Poland.
Demonstrating the creativity of Cubans after decades under U.S. sanctions, Pino modified the car so it can run on charcoal, a fuel cheaper than gasoline.
In the town, Pino is well known. His Polski attracts attention as it moves along the road with a 60-liter charcoal container welded to the back.
When people see Pino and his Polski, many gather to take photos. Some are skeptical, while others ask whether he can design a similar system for their vehicles.
“In times of difficulty like this, this is the best option we have,” said Pino, 56, who previously only completed eighth grade. “We need to travel; we need transportation so we can continue farming.”
Speaking to the media, Pino said he built the entire engine system from scrap materials and reused items. The charcoal burner is a modified gas cylinder, sealed with an old transformer lid. The gas filter is made from a stainless-steel milk container stuffed with old clothes.
After carrying out a raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3, the United States tightened control over oil exports from the South American country, effectively cutting off oil supplies to Cuba. Over the past three months, no oil shipments have reached the island.
According to Havana, Washington’s near blockade of fuel supplies has worsened the energy crisis, causing rolling blackouts, shortages of medical supplies, and a decline in tourism. In some areas, power outages lasting up to 20 hours a day occur frequently.
Facing these hardships, Pino sought creative solutions and once built a machine from a motorbike that could milk three cows at the same time.
He said he had been nurturing the idea of a charcoal-powered car for many years, noting that many Cubans have called him for guidance. “First a man who makes ice, then an ice-cream seller, then a grocery shop owner.”
According to him, almost any engine can be converted to run on charcoal by channeling hot gas into the carburetor instead of gasoline. His Polski first ran on March 4. During its initial test, the car traveled 85 km and reached a top speed of 70 km/h.
Many Cubans are astonished by the invention.
“It’s unbelievable. I don’t even know what to say,” said Yurisbel Fonseca, 27, who stopped his motorbike to take a closer look and take photos.
Narvis Cruz, 53, called the Polski “the invention of the year.” He is quite familiar with this style of modification. He is driving a 1953 Pontiac, but it uses a Perkins engine from the 1940s, a Mercedes gearbox, a steering system made in the Czech Republic, and a differential from East Germany. “This is Cuba,” he said.
