In the US, recent surveys show that around 37% of Gen Z are working in manual labor jobs, even though many of them hold university degrees. As many as 34% of bachelor’s degree holders have returned to technical or blue-collar roles — a trend that sharply contrasts with the long-standing belief that university is the only path to a secure future. This shift reflects young people’s reluctance to shoulder rising college costs, while technical trades offer attractive incomes, shorter training periods, and wide job opportunities.
Actual income levels show that their choices are far from emotional. According to 2024 statistics, elevator and escalator technicians in the US earn an average of 106,580 USD per year; electrical line installers and repairers earn about 92,560 USD; and railroad workers have an average income of 75,680 USD per year. Notably, most of these jobs only require a high-school diploma combined with on-the-job training.
Meanwhile, office jobs such as accountants or auditors — which require university degrees and higher qualifications — have a median salary of about 81,000 USD per year. Even within this field, the lowest-earning 10% make only around 52,700 USD per year, while the top 10% earn about 141,000 USD — a range that does not create a huge advantage over several technical professions that are now “rising to prominence.”
In the UK, however, the reason young people are shifting careers carries a different tone: the fear of AI. As automation increasingly replaces office roles, many young people believe that jobs requiring hands-on skills and practical tasks will be “harder for machines to take over.” Maryna Yaroshenko, 18, is an example. She is enrolled in a plumbing training program at Westminster College (CWC) in London. Originally from Ukraine, Yaroshenko says she wants a career that is truly sustainable in the long term and believes plumbing is that choice. “This is a job AI cannot replace,” she says — highlighting the shared belief among many young people in the UK that practical skills will secure their place in the future.
Yaroshenko is not alone. Increasing numbers of young people in the UK are choosing trades such as plumbing, installation work, construction, or mechanics. They are drawn not only by good wages but also by the sense of security that comes with entering a field where AI is unlikely to penetrate. What was once viewed as “working-class labor” has now become a strategic choice for young people seeking to safeguard their careers against the surge of new technologies.
Despite different motivations, young people in the US and UK share one significant point: a shift in how the value of manual labor is perceived. In the past, the image of a “worker” or “tradesperson” was often associated with lower prestige and lower income. Today, however, the very qualities once overlooked — stability, specialized skills, and essential importance to daily life — have become major advantages. This change reflects a broad transformation in the global labor market: as knowledge-based jobs are easily digitized and automated, professions requiring human effort, observation, and hands-on skill are becoming more sustainable than ever.
