Global sea surface temperatures have just reached a new record high, as El Nino combines with climate change to continue warming the Earth.
According to satellite data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the global average sea surface temperature (SST) reached 21.1°C on August 22, surpassing the previous record of 21.09°C set in 2024. This is the highest level recorded since data collection began in 1979.
Samantha Burgess, Head of Climate Strategy at Copernicus, said this is a clear sign that the oceans are coming under increasing pressure. El Nino is adding more heat to the climate system, but it is occurring against a background of temperatures that have already been rising for decades due to human activities.
An unusual record late in the year
According to Copernicus, the new record is particularly notable because global sea surface temperatures usually peak in March and April, following summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Earlier, June and July had also consecutively set records for the highest average monthly sea surface temperatures.
The main cause of the long-term warming trend remains greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. Meanwhile, El Nino – the warm phase of a natural climate cycle – continues to amplify already high global temperatures.
Rising ocean temperatures have many consequences: sea levels rise, threatening coastal communities; marine heatwaves damage coral reefs; food chains and seafood supplies are disrupted; and weather patterns around the world may become more unusual.
Risk of a “Super El Nino”
The Climate Prediction Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates that there is a more than 90% chance of a very strong El Nino occurring during the autumn and winter.
The UK Met Office has also warned that this year’s El Nino could become one of the strongest ever recorded. Adam Scaife, Head of Long-Range Prediction at the Met Office, said that climate models are showing unusually strong El Nino signals.
The effects have already begun to appear in several regions. India has recorded significantly lower-than-average rainfall during its summer monsoon season. In the United States, El Nino is expected to bring warmer winter conditions to northern states, while southern areas may face stormier weather.
The new ocean temperature record shows that El Nino is not occurring in isolation. Instead, it is combining with the long-term human-induced warming trend, placing increasing pressure on marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and the global climate system.
