As the sun rose over Bengaluru, India’s thriving technology center, another surge of automation spread across industries that had long depended on human workers. The evidence was easy to see: AI-powered chatbots responding to customer inquiries, machine learning systems evaluating market patterns, and robotic process automation performing routine office tasks. This move toward automation is far more than a passing trend; it marks a profound transformation in the way work is performed and perceived.
The world has experienced technological revolutions before, but this one is distinct because it is powered by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. According to a McKinsey report, as many as 375 million workers worldwide could be forced to change occupations by 2030 as a result of automation. India, with its large young population and rapidly expanding technology sector, is playing a central role in this transition.
Take Wipro, one of India’s leading IT companies, as an example. By incorporating AI into its operations, Wipro has improved efficiency while also working to retrain and upskill its employees. For many staff members, this has meant moving away from repetitive duties toward more advanced problem-solving responsibilities. Even so, the shift presents considerable challenges. Many workers, particularly those in entry-level roles that have traditionally formed the foundation of the IT industry, remain vulnerable to being replaced by automation.
Beyond India, automation is expanding rapidly in industries such as manufacturing in Vietnam and logistics in Brazil. In Vietnam, manufacturers are making significant investments in AI and robotic technologies to increase productivity. Through its Industry 4.0 strategy, the government aims to equip the workforce for an economy where automation plays a central role. However, this progress comes with trade-offs. Although it offers greater efficiency and stronger economic growth, it also creates concerns about employment security and the future of manual jobs in developing economies.
The belief that automation will inevitably result in mass unemployment remains widely debated. Supporters argue that AI will also generate new career opportunities requiring different skills. For instance, demand for professionals such as data scientists and AI experts has grown rapidly within the technology sector. Nevertheless, the pace of this transformation is crucial. Nations that fail to provide effective education and workforce training may face widening skills shortages and increasing economic inequality.
Governments therefore have an important responsibility. Singapore has responded proactively by introducing initiatives such as the SkillsFuture program, which helps citizens develop the skills needed in the age of AI. The goal is to make it easier for workers to adjust to evolving job demands in an economy increasingly shaped by advanced technology.
At the same time, critics warn against embracing automation without caution. They stress the importance of establishing ethical standards and regulatory frameworks to protect fair labor practices. Potential issues, including biased AI systems and threats to personal privacy, highlight the need for ongoing cooperation among governments, technology firms, and labor organizations.
As countries continue to confront the impact of automation, it is clear that the challenge extends beyond technological progress. It is also about redefining social values and the nature of work. Emerging economies such as India and Vietnam now face a crucial decision: will they use AI to strengthen both their economies and their people, or will automation deepen the inequalities that already exist? The answer will depend on how they respond to this historic economic transformation.
