With 69 days each year during which the Sun never sets, the residents of Sommarøy throw away their clocks to work and play at midnight, living completely according to their personal needs.
Sommarøy is a small fishing village located north of the Arctic Circle, about 36 km from the city of Tromsø. The island covers 0.41 square kilometers and has more than 300 residents, with infrastructure consisting of around 70 houses, one hotel, one café, and one school. The residents’ main sources of income come from fishing and tourism services.
From May 18 to July 26 every year, the Sun in Sommarøy does not set. Because daylight continues around the clock, the residents’ daily routines completely change compared to normal life. They play football at 2 or 3 a.m., children go fishing at dawn, and shops open flexibly according to actual demand. People eat when they are hungry and sleep when they are tired, instead of following conventional schedules.
At the school, students have flexible class schedules based on real conditions and are allowed to rest when needed. Community events such as weddings and festivals are also often organized according to weather conditions rather than calendar dates. One local resident said that time here is only for tourists, while for them, it is merely a reference concept.
Mrs. Marianne Solbakken, 67, said this rhythm of life is an everyday reality in Sommarøy. “People tend to go outside to work and have fun while the Sun is still shining at 11 p.m.,” she said.
Mr. Halvar Ludvigsen, a fourth-generation resident, frequently works at night. His neighbors also maintain the habit of working on their farms all day, then going fishing and eating at midnight.
In contrast to summer, from November to January of the following year, the island enters the period of the Polar Night, when the Sun disappears. During this time, residents take advantage of the darkness to observe the Northern Lights — a natural phenomenon that helps the island attract a large number of international tourists.
In 2019, Sommarøy attracted attention when residents hung dozens of clocks on the bridge leading to the island to convey a message of living in harmony with nature, aiming to become a “Time-Free Zone.”
Mr. Kjell Ove Hveding, the initiator of the campaign, said that pressure from clocks is a cause of stress in modern society. “We want to bring flexibility. People can paint their houses at 2 a.m. or go swimming at 4 a.m. if they want,” he said.
Although the campaign was later described by the media as an effective tourism promotion strategy for Norway, Professor Truls Egil Wyller from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology said that the idea of living independently from time still offers a valuable perspective. According to him, humans have only been dominated by clock-based discipline for about the past two centuries. Before that, previous generations worked, ate, and slept according to the natural needs of their bodies.
