In the race to develop artificial intelligence (AI) chips, Nvidia has long maintained a dominant position thanks to its powerful graphics processing units (GPUs). However, a Silicon Valley technology company called Cerebras Systems is emerging as a formidable competitor with its enormous chips capable of processing AI tasks at exceptional speeds.
Founded in 2015, Cerebras has chosen a different approach. Instead of cutting a silicon wafer into multiple smaller chips, as is traditionally done, the company uses almost the entire wafer to create a single processor. Its WSE-3 chip has a surface area of 46,225 mm², equivalent to a square measuring 21.5 cm on each side, making it dozens of times larger than Nvidia’s high-end GPUs.
What makes this design special is its ability to process and store data directly on the chip using high-speed SRAM memory, helping reduce the time required to transfer data between components. According to results published by Cerebras, the company’s systems can perform certain AI inference tasks 15 to 20 times faster than Nvidia GPUs.

This speed advantage is becoming increasingly important as AI is used not only to train models but also to continuously answer questions, write code, and perform complex tasks for millions of users. Faster responses mean smoother chatbot experiences and more effective AI applications across various fields.
Cerebras’ technology has attracted the attention of major corporations. In January 2026, OpenAI and Cerebras announced a partnership agreement worth more than $10 billion to deploy 750 megawatts of computing capacity by 2028. By August, Cerebras reported that its systems could generate up to 750 tokens per second when running an ultrafast AI mode, 14 times faster than the standard processing speed used for comparison.
In addition to OpenAI, Cerebras has expanded its partnerships with major technology companies and developed the CS-4 system, which was introduced as being twice as fast as its predecessor.
Nevertheless, competing with Nvidia is far from easy. Manufacturing enormous chips presents major challenges in terms of cost, defect rates, and mass production capabilities. Meanwhile, Nvidia continues to develop new architectures, such as Vera Rubin, to improve AI processing performance.
Cerebras is not yet in a position to comprehensively threaten Nvidia’s dominance, but the company is demonstrating that the AI semiconductor industry still has room for groundbreaking approaches. As demand for faster processing continues to grow, Cerebras’ enormous chips could become an important factor in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
