The vault holding more than half a million gold bars beneath New York

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

About 24 meters beneath the busy streets of Manhattan lies one of the world’s most famous and heavily protected gold vaults. It holds more than half a million gold bars, mainly belonging to governments, central banks, and international organizations.

The gold vault is located beneath the headquarters of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (New York Fed), which was built in the early 1920s. The location is particularly suitable for storing gold because the building sits directly on the bedrock of Manhattan Island, which is strong enough to support the enormous weight above it.

The amount of gold stored there increased sharply after World War II. When the Bretton Woods system was established in 1944, the US dollar was tied to gold at a rate of $35 per ounce. Many countries accumulated gold reserves and chose New York as a place to store them because it was a major financial center.

The amount of gold in the vault reached its peak in 1973, at more than 12,000 tons. By 2024, it still held around 507,000 gold bars weighing a total of 6,331 tons, making it the largest known gold storage facility in the world.

However, most of this gold does not belong to the New York Fed. The bank merely acts as a custodian for the US government, foreign central banks, and some international organizations. Private individuals and businesses are not allowed to store gold there.

Every gold bar entering the vault must go through an inspection process, which includes weighing it and checking information such as the refinery where it was produced and its purity. The New York Fed also keeps track of each bar individually. When an account holder wants to withdraw gold, they receive the exact bars they originally deposited rather than other bars of equivalent value.

After inspection, the gold is placed in one of the vault’s 122 compartments. Each compartment is reserved for a single account holder and is identified only by a number rather than a name to protect the owner’s identity. The Fed does not charge a storage fee, but it does charge fees when gold is deposited, withdrawn, or transferred between owners.

A nearly impenetrable door

One of the most remarkable features of the gold vault is its security system. The vault has only one entrance, protected by a steel cylinder weighing about 90 tons and standing 2.7 meters high. It is set inside a steel-and-concrete frame weighing around 140 tons.

When the door is closed, four steel bolts are inserted into holes in the cylinder, activating a time-lock system. The vault is also surrounded by thick reinforced-concrete walls, with cameras operating around the clock and motion sensors monitoring the area.

No employee can access or move the gold alone. Whenever a compartment is opened or gold is handled, at least three people must be present: two vault employees and one internal auditor. The rule is so strict that even a simple task such as changing a light bulb in the area requires three people.

Employees working there also have to wear protective shoes because a standard gold bar is extremely heavy and could cause serious injury if dropped on someone’s foot.

Not all of America’s gold is stored here

In addition to gold belonging to foreign countries and organizations, the New York Fed’s vault also holds about 5% of the United States’ gold reserves. Most of the US government’s remaining gold is stored elsewhere, most famously at Fort Knox in Kentucky, as well as at facilities in Denver and West Point.

Because the New York Fed does not disclose the identities of the owners or the exact amount of gold stored in each compartment, the vault has long been the subject of various theories. There have even been claims that some of the bars might contain tungsten coated with gold as gold and tungsten have relatively similar densities.

However, in 2012, the US Mint and the US Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General conducted tests, sending 367 gold samples to an independent laboratory. The results showed that most of the samples had a level of purity consistent with government standards, with a margin of error of no more than 0.13%.
