Sweet leaf is a familiar vegetable in Vietnamese meals, rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. However, pregnant women, especially during the first three months of pregnancy, are often advised to be cautious about consuming this vegetable.
One reason sweet leaf raises concerns is the presence of papaverine, an alkaloid that affects smooth muscles. Some sources warn that consuming sweet leaf may pose potential risks during pregnancy.
In fact, papaverine is primarily known for its ability to relax smooth muscles, rather than directly stimulate strong uterine contractions, as some widely circulated claims suggest. Furthermore, there is currently insufficient strong clinical evidence to prove that consuming normal amounts of sweet leaf causes uterine contractions or miscarriage in humans.
Therefore, it should not be assumed that eating sweet leaf necessarily increases the risk of miscarriage. Pregnant women who accidentally eat this vegetable should not be overly worried.
In addition, sweet leaf contains certain natural compounds that may interfere with the absorption of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for the development of the fetus’s skeletal system during the early stages of pregnancy. For this reason, pregnant women are advised to avoid this vegetable during early pregnancy as a precautionary measure.
