Why are Vietnamese people increasingly choosing Lexus?

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

For many years, Mercedes-Benz almost dominated Vietnam’s luxury car market. However, its position is beginning to show signs of change. According to vehicle registration data collected by VnExpress, in the first seven months of 2026, Lexus recorded 1,247 vehicles, surpassing Mercedes with just over 1,000 and, in a rare occurrence, rising to the top of the luxury car market.

The shift becomes even clearer when looking back at previous years. In 2020, nearly 6,300 Mercedes vehicles were newly registered, while no competitor reached 1,500. By 2025, the Mercedes figure had fallen to 2,339. In contrast, Lexus increased from 1,152 vehicles in 2024 to 2,151 in 2025.

So why are more and more Vietnamese people choosing Lexus?

One major advantage of Lexus is the reputation of Japanese cars for durability and reliability. As Toyota’s luxury car brand, Lexus offers a premium experience while also inheriting the image of durability long associated with Japanese vehicles. For people who want to use their cars for many years, this sense of peace of mind can be highly appealing.

Lexus also represents a different kind of luxury from Mercedes. Mercedes is often associated with a modern, youthful image and a clear display of status. Its three-pointed star logo, together with models such as the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class and GLC, has long been a familiar symbol of success.

Lexus, meanwhile, tends towards more understated luxury. Models such as the ES, RX and LX still clearly reflect the value of the car and the owner’s status, but they generally feel less showy. This appeals to middle-aged customers, business owners and people with a solid financial background. According to an expert quoted by VnExpress, Lexus customers tend to be older and more financially stable than Mercedes customers, meaning they may also be less affected during periods of economic uncertainty.

Another strength of Lexus is its smoothness and comfort. While Mercedes stands out for its technology and driving experience, Lexus pays particular attention to cabin quietness, a smooth ride and passenger comfort. These qualities suit people who use their cars for family purposes or business, or who frequently sit in the back seat.

Lexus is also benefiting from its hybrid strategy. Since May 2025, the RX – Lexus’s key model in Vietnam – has switched entirely to hybrid versions in the domestic market. Hybrid technology also helps save fuel without requiring drivers to look for charging stations, as the battery is recharged while the vehicle is running.

This sense of “peace of mind” is further strengthened by Lexus’s warranty policy. Since May 2026, petrol-powered Lexus vehicles can be covered by a warranty of up to five years with unlimited mileage, while hybrid vehicles and their hybrid batteries can be covered for up to ten years with unlimited mileage, provided that maintenance requirements are met.

However, Mercedes still has major advantages. The German automaker has a broad product range, several locally assembled models and a much stronger distribution network. Mercedes attracts buyers with design, technology, driving experience and the reputation of a long-established German luxury brand.

Interestingly, Lexus has risen to the top despite having a much smaller sales network. According to VnExpress, Lexus has only two official showrooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, while Mercedes has 14 dealerships. Even so, Lexus registrations in the first seven months of 2026 increased by nearly 75% compared with the same period a year earlier.

This shift suggests that some Vietnamese consumers are beginning to view luxury cars differently. When spending several billion dong on a car, they do not simply want a vehicle that makes a strong impression. They are also looking for durability, comfort, understated luxury and peace of mind for long-term use. Mercedes remains a powerful symbol of German luxury, but Lexus is showing that “luxury combined with peace of mind” is also a particularly attractive formula in Vietnam.
