If you’re neither a man nor Queen Elizabeth II, you’re not likely to appear on a banknote. Though it sounds biased against women, it’s highly understandable as historical currency design has often favored prominent political leaders, typically men, who were seen as representing national identity and stability. Additionally, cultural norms and historical contexts have often sidelined women’s contributions, making their representation on currency less common. However, efforts are increasingly being made to recognize and honor the significant achievements of women throughout history.
