Recently, a unique phenomenon has emerged on social media and among young people: many youngsters, especially those from Gen Z, have shown intense admiration for military soldiers—something previously only seen toward entertainment celebrities. Images capturing scenes of schoolgirls giving flowers, asking for autographs, and even cheering upon seeing soldiers at Saigon Station before the April 30 holiday have stirred public attention online.
One of the most noticed figures is Senior Lieutenant Le Hoang Hiep, who became the center of attention because of his serious demeanor and composed manner. On TikTok, many videos of him have attracted hundreds of thousands of views. Many young people have dubbed the soldiers “national crushes,” created fan pages, and even ranked the “handsome men of the military.”
However, this phenomenon has sparked mixed opinions. Some believe that young people idolizing soldiers is a positive expression of affection, national pride, and the closeness between the army and the people. But others are concerned that excessive and entertainment-style idolization may distort the serious and disciplined image of the Vietnam People’s Army.
Associate Professor Dr. Le Quy Duc argues that expressing affection toward soldiers is not wrong, but it needs to be based on appropriate cultural standards. Meanwhile, psychologist Nguyen Thi Tam sees this phenomenon as a result of changing ways young people express emotions today—more openly and directly, partly influenced by Western culture.
Although the debate continues, this trend of young people admiring soldiers reflects a shift in how the younger generation perceives and expresses their feelings toward the armed forces—from a stern, distant image to one that is more approachable and inspirational. The challenge lies in maintaining the traditional respect and solemnity of the soldier’s image while embracing the fresh expressions of admiration from the youth in a balanced way.
