Why do feet smell?

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

Sweat on our feet is naturally almost odorless. However, after just a few hours of wearing closed shoes, our feet can develop an unpleasant smell, sometimes resembling fermented cheese or sour vinegar. What causes this phenomenon?

The answer lies in the interaction between sweat and bacteria living on our skin.

The feet are among the parts of the body with the highest density of sweat glands, with approximately 250,000 glands across both feet. Sweat consists mainly of water, mineral salts, and small amounts of other dissolved substances. Freshly produced sweat itself has almost no smell.

However, when we wear socks and shoes for several hours, sweat cannot evaporate easily, making the environment inside our shoes warm and humid. These conditions are favorable for bacteria to grow and become active.

Many types of bacteria naturally live on the skin of our feet, including Staphylococcus epidermidis and Brevibacterium. They break down organic substances found in sweat and on the skin’s surface, producing volatile compounds with unpleasant odors.

One of the most important odor-causing substances is isovaleric acid, which is produced when bacteria break down leucine, an amino acid. This compound has a sour, pungent smell, quite similar to aged cheese. In addition, some sulfur-containing compounds, such as methanethiol, can produce a smell resembling rotten cabbage.

Interestingly, some bacteria associated with foot odor are related to bacteria involved in the cheese-ripening process. This is also one reason why the two smells can sometimes be quite similar.

The intensity of foot odor varies from person to person. People who sweat excessively, frequently wear closed shoes, or use socks that do not allow moisture to escape easily are more likely to experience this problem. Fungal infections and certain skin conditions can also make the smell worse.

To reduce foot odor, the most important thing is to keep the feet dry and control bacterial growth. It is advisable to wash your feet daily, dry carefully between your toes, change socks regularly, and choose breathable shoes. Alternating between different pairs of shoes also gives them enough time to dry completely before being worn again.

Therefore, foot odor is not simply a sign of poor hygiene. It is the result of a natural biological process in which bacteria break down substances on the skin into odor-producing compounds. By controlling moisture and maintaining proper foot hygiene, most cases can be significantly improved.
