Every Halloween, orange pumpkins with strange faces appear in front of houses, on doorsteps, and in gardens. They are often carved with triangular eyes, a pointed nose, and a wide mouth filled with sharp teeth. When a candle is lit inside, light shines through the carved openings, making the pumpkin’s face look spooky.
The tradition of pumpkin carving is closely linked to an Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack. According to the folktale, Jack was a cunning man who repeatedly used tricks to deceive the Devil.
When Jack died, his soul was neither allowed into heaven nor sent to hell. He was forced to wander in the darkness, with only a glowing ember to light his way. He placed the ember inside a hollowed-out turnip, creating a small lantern to carry on his endless journey.
The Irish called this figure Jack of the Lantern, which was later shortened to Jack-o’-lantern. The name gradually became associated with lanterns made from hollowed-out vegetables, featuring frightening faces and light shining from within.

From turnips to pumpkins
Before pumpkins became a symbol of Halloween, people in Ireland and Scotland often carved strange faces into turnips or other root vegetables. They placed candles inside and left these lanterns near doors or windows.
According to folk beliefs, these frightening faces could help ward off wandering spirits and supernatural forces. This was because people believed that, at this time, the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead became thinner, allowing spirits to appear among the living.
During the 19th century, many Irish people immigrated to North America and brought this tradition with them. There, they discovered that pumpkins were common, large in size, relatively soft inside, and easier to carve than turnips. As a result, pumpkins gradually replaced the traditional root vegetables.
With their bright orange color and distinctive round shape, pumpkins quickly became ideal decorations. Over time, the image of the glowing pumpkin lantern became widespread and developed into one of the most recognizable symbols of Halloween.

Today, the original purpose of warding off evil spirits has largely given way to entertainment and creativity. People carve not only frightening faces but also black cats, witches, castles, cartoon characters, and intricate patterns.
