UK – Four years after receiving the gene therapy Zolgensma, priced at around USD 2.4 million, Edward Willis-Hall—once predicted to spend his life in a wheelchair—can now walk independently and swim like a typical child.
Information about Edward’s recovery, now aged five, was reported by the BBC on December 31, 2025. He is among the first patients to benefit from a spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) treatment program funded by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).
Four years ago, Edward was diagnosed with SMA Type 1 at just two months of age. This is the most severe and rare inherited form of the disease, causing rapid muscle degeneration, paralysis, respiratory failure, and often death before the age of two if left untreated.
The turning point came in March 2021, when the NHS reached a historic agreement with the manufacturer to include Zolgensma—the world’s most expensive drug, with a list price of £1.79 million (about USD 2.4 million)—in its treatment coverage. Edward received a single infusion designed to deliver a healthy gene into his body, replacing the defective one.
The treatment results brought what was described as “miraculous progress.” Megan Willis, Edward’s mother, said her son has reached motor milestones the family once never dared to hope for. Although he had to undergo surgery to replace both hip joints in October 2024, the boy has since made a strong recovery.
“Edward can now do everything a normal five-year-old can. He goes to school, has lots of new friends, and can even swim and float on the water—something extremely difficult for children with spinal muscular atrophy,” Ms. Willis shared.
To give their son the best possible chance of recovery, the Willis family moved from Colchester to London so Edward could more easily attend physiotherapy sessions five times a week. His mother also quit her job as an events manager to care for him full time.
Professor James Palmer, Medical Director of NHS England, confirmed that Edward is one of more than 150 children with SMA whose lives have been saved thanks to this therapy. According to NHS data, around 60–80 babies are born with the condition in the UK each year. Previous clinical studies show that children treated early with Zolgensma have significantly higher survival rates, with most developing motor skills such as sitting and walking without assistance.
Although the drug itself is funded by the NHS, intensive rehabilitation remains costly. Over the past five years, the Willis family has raised £170,000 through GoFundMe to cover private healthcare services not included in insurance coverage.
