Around 1 a.m. each day, over 50 fishermen from Vinh Moc village, Cua Tung commune (formerly Vinh Linh district), set out to sea in composite boats to catch herring. After 2–3 hours of casting their nets, the boats return one by one to shore.
On the sandy beach, the fishermen light lamps or wear headlamps to remove the fish. Four people each grab a corner of the net and shake it vigorously to make the herring fall onto a tarp laid out on the ground. Many fish are stuck tightly, so they use their hands to pull them off quickly while the fish are still fresh for selling overnight.
According to Mr. Ho Van Thanh, herring can be caught year-round, but the peak season is from after the Lunar New Year until the end of the fourth lunar month. “This time last year, there were hardly any herring, but this year we’ve had a big catch,” he said.
Each boat has 2–3 fishermen who go over a nautical mile offshore, where the water is over 12 meters deep. They cast nets 600–1,000 meters long and 9 meters wide, with floats on top and lead weights at the bottom, forming a long barrier net that blocks the herring’s path. “Herring swim in schools near the surface, so they get caught easily,” Mr. Thanh explained.
At around 4 a.m., fishermen start hauling in their nets. For the past 10 days, some boats have caught up to 600 kilograms on good days, and only about 50 kilograms on slower ones.
Mr. Le Phung and his two sons brought in 250 kilograms on this trip. They spent three hours, from 4 to 7 a.m., removing the fish from the nets.
Besides wholesale, large-sized, undamaged herring are selected for retail sale at markets.
After being shaken free from the nets, the fish are scattered across tarps and then pulled closer to the sea for rinsing.
Herring have slightly greenish skin, long bodies, and many small bones. Each kilogram contains about 30–35 fish. Wholesale prices range from 12,000–15,000 VND/kg, while retail prices reach 20,000 VND/kg. The fish can be served raw, grilled, fried, or dried.
The herring are placed in plastic trays and rinsed with seawater to remove sand and dirt. Many women carry the fish to market using traditional shoulder poles.
Some people use hand-pulled carts to transport the herring to main roads for delivery to traders.
The fish are packed with ice in trays and loaded onto trucks for distribution. Trader Ho Thi Thinh said she delivers herring to Quang Tri and several other provinces in the North Central Coast. “On busy days I buy up to 12 tons, and around 4 tons on slower days,” she said.
Boats that return are pulled ashore at Vinh Moc village in Cua Tung commune. After all the fish are removed, fishermen clean and dry their nets in preparation for the next trip to sea.
