In the history of the nation, the victory at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 was not only the pinnacle of Vietnamese military art but also a testament to the far-sighted vision of President Ho Chi Minh. Alongside strategic decisions in military and diplomacy, there was a seemingly small detail that revealed the depth of his thinking: the directive to stockpile salt for the campaign.
At that time, salt was not only a seasoning for meals but also a strategic material: it helped preserve food, provided essential minerals, and prevented exhaustion during long days of fighting in harsh mountainous terrain. Fully aware of this, Ho Chi Minh instructed the logistics units to stockpile a sufficient amount of salt well before the campaign began. The salt supply was transported from the lowlands, across hundreds of kilometers of forest roads, by human porters, packhorses, and cargo bicycles, ensuring it reached the soldiers at the right time.
This decision was not merely about securing material supplies; it reflected Ho Chi Minh’s comprehensive strategic vision. He understood that a large-scale campaign could not be planned around only guns, ammunition, and food, but also required full consideration of every factor related to health, morale, and the ability to sustain combat. In the context of the French army’s attempts to cut off supply lines, prior preparation enabled our forces to maintain the pace of the offensive and their endurance throughout the 56 days and nights.
The “grain of salt” in this story thus became a symbol of Ho Chi Minh’s principle of “attending to the small in order to win the great.” The victory at Dien Bien Phu, alongside the strategic brilliance of General Vo Nguyen Giap and the courage of the entire people, also bore the mark of a leader with foresight, one who understood both the grand scope of strategy and the details of everyday life.
