The author graduated in photography and graphic design in Paris, France. In 1987, he was the first person to receive a scholarship from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to come to Vietnam and study at the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts. During this period, he met many lecturers, students, and artists there and roamed around the capital on trams to explore the city.
The photographer captured Tram No. 35 traveling along a crowded street.
In the book, he wrote: “Getting on a tram was like beginning a journey. As a passenger, I tried to use my lens to record on film the atmosphere inside the carriage as well as the exterior scenes, the streets, and the passersby.”
Riding alongside Tram No. 12 is a long line of bicycles — a common means of transport for Hanoians at the time.
In addition to photographing the outside of trams, Jean-Charles Sarrazin captured images of local people. They could be elderly women returning from the market or a mother and child chatting. In the photo, he caught a moment when the tram was packed with passengers, with some looking directly into his lens.
The author took advantage of a window frame to photograph his friend — painter Tran Trong Vu, the youngest son of poet Tran Dan. He was the photographer’s companion on his first tram ride. In 1988, an Trong Vu was then a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Fine Arts.
Along the streets of Hanoi, the photographer also encountered many cyclos. This was a daily mode of transportation in the city during the 1980s.
Jean-Charles Sarrazin photographed a cyclo driver dozing off, parking his vehicle in front of No. 111 Thuoc Bac — a street known for selling traditional medicines.

According to the author, cyclos in Hanoi were very heavy, so drivers had to be physically strong. Later, lighter models appeared, made from aluminum and based on designs from the South.
The photo book, published by the Vietnam News Agency Publishing House in cooperation with Nha Nam, has nearly 250 pages and is presented in three languages: Vietnamese, English, and French.
Writer Nguyen Hoang Dieu Thuy — editor of the work — said she saw in the book the passion of a photographer in the late 1980s, and she was also fascinated by the chance to access stories from the past.
Jean-Charles Sarrazin introduced the publication in Hanoi on November 11.
Photographer Nguyen Huu Bao said he loved the book, considering it a kind of textbook for later generations to look back on a historical period of Hanoi. According to him, the changes in the capital over the past half-century cannot be fully captured in literature, poetry, or journalism but are most clearly portrayed through photographs.
